Esquire's editor-in-chief had it down as settled fact. "And you performed at her wedding," Michael Sebastian told Tim McGraw. He hadn't. McGraw did not perform at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's wedding at Madison Square Garden on 3 July, and he said so on the spot.

"Well, I didn't perform at her wedding. That was a rumor," he said in the Esquire interview, published on 28 October.
"Yeah, I didn't perform, but we were there," he added. E! News reported that the other half of "we" was his wife, Faith Hill.
So how did the internet book him?
The sit-down followed McGraw's induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, as Whiskey Riff noted.
Sebastian's set-up ran through their history. Her first single was titled "Tim McGraw", and the two sang a duet in 2013. Then came the wedding.
McGraw corrected only the last item. Sebastian came back with a joke. "Oh, so the internet is not always correct, is that what you're telling me?" he asked.
"The internet's a surprise," McGraw said. "The internet's not always correct."
So he had a seat that night, not a set.
"Taylor's always been close to our family, our girls," he went on, adding that the family is delighted she found Travis, "who's a cool guy as well."
The claim has a date. On 27 June, a week before the wedding, Page Six reported that Stevie Nicks and McGraw would perform.
TMZ relayed it within hours, crediting Page Six and writing that the pair were "slated to sing some songs". Fox News ran it the same day.
Whiskey Riff repeated it on 1 July as "reportedly set to perform". IBTimes UK was more careful, noting that neither McGraw nor Nicks had commented.
After the wedding, the plan hardened into fact. On 22 July, Bustle wrote that the performers "included Tim McGraw, Stevie Nicks, and Paul McCartney". By October, Esquire was reading it back to McGraw.
Try one test on anything shared with you. If it is dated before 3 July, it is a prediction. If it is dated after, check who it quotes.
His name is on the song that started her career.
"Tim McGraw" was Swift's debut single, released by Big Machine on 19 June 2006, when she was 16.
She wrote it with Liz Rose about a senior boyfriend leaving for college, and has said the idea came to her "in math class". It reached No. 6 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart.
McGraw told Sebastian that he and Hill took her out on their Soul2Soul tour early in her career, "really just her and a guitar." In 2013 the two released Highway Don't Care together.
The couple have not published a performer list. The names in circulation rest on very different evidence.
Paul McCartney rests on his own word. On Jimmy Kimmel Live on 2 October, Parade reported, he said "She asked me to do it". The song he named was "I Want to Hold Your Hand".
His advice to the bride, he said, was "You should sing along, and you should sing it to your man."
For Stevie Nicks, the source is a broadcaster. "We can confirm that Stevie Nicks did perform," Robin Roberts said on Good Morning America the day after the wedding, Billboard reported. The line is Roberts's, not a statement from Nicks.
Two guests who spoke to NBC News described performances from both at the reception. They also said Swift and Kelce sang together at the rehearsal dinner the night before, which our rehearsal dinner story covers.
The bride and groom sang too. "Trav can sing," best man Jason Kelce said on the Ross Tucker Football Podcast on 21 July, though he admitted it "obviously pales in comparison to some of the other people singing that night, but he did OK."
E! News adds Avril Lavigne to its list of "confirmed performers", without saying who confirmed it.
None of these accounts puts Tim McGraw on stage.
The same NBC News report carried the couple's statement, through their representatives. Adam Sandler officiated. Their looks were Christian Dior Haute Couture. There was no traditional wedding party, but Austin Swift was man of honour and Jason Kelce was best man.
That statement named no performers. In July, a Dior spokesperson told The New York Times that the first wedding photos would come from Swift's own Instagram, NBC New York reported.
Our Taylor Swift wedding photos story has the leaked venue plans and the Dior looks, and what the guests wore shows the room McGraw sat in. More of the year's weddings are in our celebrity weddings index.
If a famous friend, or a cousin with a very good voice, offers to sing at your wedding, keep it between you and the band leader, and leave the song off the printed order of service. Nobody can post a set list that was never printed.
Esquire's question had Tim McGraw on the stage. He was a guest in the room, 20 years after a 16-year-old named her first single after him.
