Gusti Sura Wedding Takes a Royal Kirab Through Solo

Gusti Sura Wedding Takes a Royal Kirab Through Solo

Some doors at Pura Mangkunegaran stay shut this week, and others open onto the street. The Gusti Sura wedding, a dhaup ageng (grand royal wedding), runs from 3 to 8 November 2026 at the palace in Solo (Surakarta), Central Java.

Gusti Sura, the ruler's elder sister, marries KPH FX Adimas Rosdian. On Saturday 7 November, the city gets to see them.

On 20 October, the couple carried an invitation to former president Joko Widodo's Solo home in person.

"Please pray for us, that everything goes smoothly and we all stay well," Gusti Sura said, Merdeka reported.

His reply was brief. Yes, he had the invitation, and yes, he would come in beskap, full Javanese formal dress.

The palace told their story on its own Instagram on 30 October. "In each other, they found harmony and shared values," it wrote.

The committee's account, reported by Wartajoglo, fills in the rest. They met in 2015, parted within a year, and found each other again by chance in early 2025.

Who is Gusti Sura, and who is she marrying?

Gusti Sura is GRAj (Gusti Raden Ajeng) Ancillasura Marina Sudjiwo, daughter of Mangkunegara IX. Gusti is her royal title, not part of her name.

Her younger brother, KGPAA Mangkunegara X, known as Gusti Bhre, rules the house. He broke the news of the wedding in August, iNews reported.

She is reported to head the Kawedanan Panti Budaya, the palace's office for culture.

Adimas Rosdian studied in Australia and is a director of PT Rosalia Indah Transport, the bus company his father, Yustinus Soeroso, founded, a second iNews profile says.

Mangkunegaran is a princely house founded in 1757 by Raden Mas Said, and Pura Mangkunegaran is its palace. Gusti Bhre has led the house since 12 March 2022.

Six days of dhaup ageng, rite by rite

The first three days stay inside the palace walls, and the public's part begins on 6 November.

Jatengpos has the palace programme, and CNN Indonesia explains the older customs inside it. Day by day, the programme reads like this:

  1. 3 November, Sengkeran

The week opens at Bale Warni in the Keputren, the princesses' quarters.
  2. 4 November, the palace is dressed

Bleketepe, a woven coconut-leaf mat that stands for self-purification, goes up, and the groom's rites begin at the Pendapa Ageng, the palace's great pavilion.
  3. 5 November, siraman and midodareni

Siraman is a bathing rite for purity of body and mind. Midodareni, the eve when heavenly maidens are believed to visit the bride, closes the day.
  4. 6 November, the vows and panggih

The vows are held privately in the morning. Panggih, the meeting of bride and groom, follows at 6pm, then the first pahargyan (reception) for the most senior guests and family.
  5. 7 November, the kirab

The bridal procession leaves the palace at about 4pm WIB (Western Indonesian Time), and a second reception is expected to host about 1,000 guests, family and business contacts among them.
  6. 8 November, the city's last day

Mangayubagyo, the public celebration that opens on 6 November, closes on the palace grounds.

The palace spokesperson, KPH Tjuk Susilo, counts eight dances across the week. The first, the Beksan Menak Koncar, is danced by seven dancers on 4 November.

For the older rites at any Javanese wedding, read Javanese wedding rituals and their meanings, or go wider with the wedding traditions of Indonesia.

The vows happen privately, at Solo's first church

The Dhaup Suci, the holy vows, is a private wedding blessing at Gereja Santo Antonius Padua Purbayan at 8am on 6 November, the committee says.

It was Solo's first church, a Catholic one built with money from a public lottery, Good News From Indonesia records.

Its first mass was held on 22 December 1907, and the national hero Slamet Riyadi was baptised there.

The committee calls it a blessing and says no more.

What Gusti Sura wears for the panggih

Bride and groom both wear Dodot Ageng Bango Buthak, Mettanews reports.

A dodot is a ceremonial cloth twice the width of an everyday wrapped skirt cloth, Liputan6 explains. In the Solo basahan style, the couple wear no upper garment.

For the kirab and the second reception, they change into Kasatriyan dress.

The name comes from satriya, a knight, Kawruh Basa notes. The groom rides out as a knight, with his bride at his side.

Then the paes, the painted forehead design of a Javanese bride. In the Solo style, its centre motif is the gajahan, named for gajah (elephant), CNN Indonesia notes.

The kirab on 7 November belongs to Solo

The couple ride in the Kereta Glass Landauer, Suara Karya reports, and the palace's bregada, its ceremonial guard, march with them.

The route leaves the palace for Jalan Ronggowarsito and heads west to the Gajah Lahan junction. It turns left past the district court and Pasar Pon, then returns along Jalan Diponegoro.

Dishub, the city's transport office, manages traffic from about 3pm and expects roads to reopen around 5pm to 6pm, Radar Solo reports. Expect closures and diversions as the day requires.

Why a procession at all? "The philosophy of the kirab is also to introduce them to the people," Tjuk Susilo told Fokus Jateng.

Following from home? About 4pm WIB is 8pm in Sydney, 1pm in Dubai, 9am in London and 4am in New York.

No livestream has been announced, so watch the palace's Instagram.

A pesta rakyat that feeds 2,000 a day

From 6 to 8 November, the Pamedan hosts Mangayubagyo. It is the green field where Mangkunegaran's soldiers drill, and the theme, "Srawung Kabagyan", means a gathering to share happiness.

Katadata calls this pesta rakyat (public festival) the city's way to take part.

"Mangkunegaran is preparing a meal for about 2,000 people every day," Tjuk Susilo said.

Local small businesses cook these Segahan Pahargyan (reception meals). They go to residents of five Surakarta districts, orphanages and homes for the elderly.

A wayang kulit (shadow puppet) performance marks National Wayang Day, and 200 children from orphanages are invited to a film screening.

Well-wishers can leave messages in the Buku Pangestu (book of blessings), on the Pohon Pangestu (blessing tree) or as Suwanten Pangestu (spoken blessings).

Mangkunegaran has danced a bedhaya for brides before

In January 1921, Partini, daughter of Mangkunegara VII, married Hoesein Djajadiningrat at the palace. A bedhaya, the sacred court dance of the Javanese palaces, was danced for them, and the Wereldmuseum photographed it.

This week, Bedhaya Suryasumirah is on the reception programme. More than a century on, the same house is dancing for a bride.

Who gets which part of the Gusti Sura wedding

"Dhaup Ageng is a family celebration that marks a new journey for two people and two families," said spokesperson R.Ay.T. Ayu Rosetyastuti, Joglosemar News reported.

Your wedding may not need a glass carriage, but a week of celebrations abroad raises the same question of who is invited to what. Destination wedding etiquette covers the guest side, and your Wedded Advisor through Wedded Concierge plans the days around it.

By Saturday afternoon, the doors that stay shut all week open onto Jalan Ronggowarsito. That part, Solo gets to keep.
