Look down on Port Hercule from the Rock

Monaco is best seen from above. Stand on the Rock in Monaco-Ville and the whole principality lies below you, with superyachts lined up in Port Hercule and Monte Carlo climbing the hillside opposite. The Prince's Palace is here, where the guard changes each day just before noon, and the Oceanographic Museum sits on the cliff edge.

Across the harbour, Monte Carlo centres on its Belle Époque casino and the opera house that shares its building. Each spring the streets become the circuit for the Grand Prix. Monaco is the second-smallest country in the world, so a day or two covers it well before your ship leaves for the Mediterranean.

Explore the Rock and Monte Carlo

The old town and the casino quarter face each other across the harbour.

  • Monte Carlo

The Casino and its gardens, grand hotels and the streets of the Grand Prix circuit above the sea.

  • The Rock and the harbour

The Prince's Palace and cathedral on the old headland, looking down on the yachts of Port Hercule.

Arrive through Nice airport

Monaco has no airport, so flights land at Nice, about half an hour away by road.

  • Sydney (one stop): about 24 h
  • Melbourne (one stop): about 24 h
  • Brisbane (one stop): about 25 h
  • Perth (one stop): about 20 h
  • Los Angeles (one stop): about 14 h
  • London (non-stop): about 2 h
  • Dubai (non-stop): about 7 h

Drive the coast into France or Italy

Nice and the Italian Riviera are both under an hour away.

Find out what Monaco requires

How does entry work for Monaco when you arrive through Nice?+
Monaco has no airport or border checks of its own, so you enter through France and Schengen rules apply. Australian, UK, US and Canadian passport holders can stay visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, with fingerprints and a photo taken under the EU Entry/Exit System at the first Schengen arrival. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change.
When is Monaco calmer but still warm?+
June and September are warm and quieter than high summer. Hotels fill quickly around Grand Prix weekend and the Monaco Yacht Show in September, so plan around them if you want quiet streets.
How many nights in Monaco before a cruise?+
One or two nights covers the Rock, the Prince's Palace, the Oceanographic Museum and an evening in Monte Carlo. A third night lets you add Èze or Menton along the coast.
Is there a dress code at the Monte-Carlo Casino?+
Yes. Smart dress is expected in the gaming rooms, and sportswear, shorts and flip-flops are not allowed. Bring a passport or ID, as visitors must be 18 or over.
How could we celebrate a birthday in Monte Carlo?+
A night at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, followed by dinner on a terrace above the harbour, makes a fine birthday evening. Your travel expert can also book a private boat along the coast to Cap Ferrat.
What is the quickest way from Nice airport to Monaco?+
A private transfer along the coast road takes around 30 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic. A helicopter takes about seven minutes and lands at Fontvieille, near the port.
When does the guard change at the Prince's Palace?+
The changing of the guard takes place each day at 11.55 am in the square in front of the palace. Arrive by 11.30 am for a place near the front.
Can we watch the Grand Prix from a yacht or terrace?+
Yes. Terraces and yachts in Port Hercule overlook the circuit, and your travel expert can look into hospitality for race weekend well in advance. Places are limited, so ask as soon as you know your dates.
