A lagoon villa in the Noonu Atoll

1 day

Malé → Noonu Atoll

You stay on a private island in the Noonu Atoll, where water villas and island residences sit around a calm six-kilometre lagoon. Days move between the reef, the spa and the beach, with dinners drawn from the island's own farm. Evenings bring outdoor films under the stars and a sunset cruise to look for dolphins.

Wake above a lagoon in the Maldives

In the Maldives the day is set by the water. You wake above a lagoon clear enough to see rays pass under the deck, swim before breakfast and spend the afternoon on a reef where turtles and reef sharks cruise past. Each resort usually has an island to itself, so your stay feels private whether you choose a beach villa or one built over the water.

The atolls reward travellers who get in the water. Snorkel with manta rays in season, take a dhoni out at dusk to look for dolphins or let a resort marine biologist show you the house reef. Evenings bring dinners on the sand by lantern light, and the islands are one of the easiest choices for a honeymoon or anniversary.

Pick the atoll that suits your stay

Atolls near Malé are a short boat ride away, and the further ones reward a seaplane flight.

  • Noonu Atoll

A quieter northern atoll, about 45 minutes by seaplane from Malé, with reefs, sandbanks and wide lagoons.

  • Malé

The small capital where every trip arrives, with a fish market, mosques and a short boat ride to the airport.

Plan around the Maldives dry season

The drier northeast monsoon brings calm seas and clear skies, and the wetter months bring manta rays and quieter resorts.

  • JanuaryBest

Dry, sunny and calm, with clear water for snorkelling.

  • FebruaryBest

The driest month, with the best visibility on the reefs.

  • MarchBest

Hot, dry and calm, ideal for diving and sandbank picnics.

  • AprilBest

Warm and mostly dry as the season turns.

  • MayMixed

The wet monsoon begins, with showers and stronger winds.

  • JuneMixed

Rain and wind come in bursts, with sunny spells between.

  • JulyMixed

Changeable weather, good for manta rays on some reefs.

  • AugustMixed

Showers and sunshine, with quieter islands.

  • SeptemberMixed

Still the wet season, short storms and warm seas.

  • OctoberGood

Rain eases and calmer days return.

  • NovemberGood

Settling weather and clear water as the dry season nears.

  • DecemberBest

Dry season begins, festive dates book out early.

Fly into Malé, then on by seaplane

Malé has direct flights from the Gulf, Asia and parts of Europe, and most other routes connect once.

  • Sydney (one stop): about 14 h
  • Melbourne (one stop): about 14 h
  • Brisbane (one stop): about 15 h
  • Perth (one stop): about 9 h
  • Los Angeles (one stop): about 24 h
  • London (non-stop): about 10.5 h
  • Dubai (non-stop): about 4.5 h

Add Sri Lanka before the beach

Colombo is about an hour and a half from Malé, so Sri Lanka's tea country and temples make a natural first stop.

  • Sri Lanka

Ancient rock fortresses, tea country and wild southern beaches.

Ask about seaplanes and meal plans

Is the Maldives tourist visa free?+
Yes. The Maldives gives visitors a free tourist visa on arrival if they meet the entry rules, including a confirmed booking at a registered resort or hotel. You also complete a Traveller Declaration within 96 hours before arrival. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change. Your travel expert confirms the rules for your passport when you book.
Should we choose a seaplane or speedboat resort?+
Resorts near Malé are a short speedboat ride away, and the outer atolls need a seaplane, which flies in daylight only. A late arrival may mean a night near Malé first.
Which monsoon season suits a Maldives stay?+
The northeast monsoon early in the year brings drier weather and calm, clear water. The southwest monsoon is wetter, with manta rays gathering in some atolls.
How many nights in the Maldives is enough?+
Five to seven nights lets you settle into one resort. Some couples split ten nights between a beach villa and an overwater villa.
Is an overwater villa worth it?+
Overwater villas give you steps straight into the lagoon and a wide ocean view, while beach villas offer more shade and privacy. Many resorts let you split your stay between the two.
Which meal plan should we choose?+
Each resort sits on its own island, so you eat there every night. Full board or all inclusive suits most couples, and half board suits lighter eaters.
Why do so many couples honeymoon in the Maldives?+
Each resort has an island to itself, so even a large one feels private, and sandbank dinners and couples' spa treatments are easy to arrange. Tell your travel expert the date and the resort prepares the details.
Where can we swim with manta rays?+
Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll is the best known site, with mantas gathering in the wetter months. It is a protected area, open to snorkellers only.
