Feel at home in Ireland

Millions of people around the world have Irish roots, and arriving often feels like a homecoming. The welcome is real: a fire in the hotel lounge, a pint poured with patience, a stranger in the pub who wants to know which county your family left.

The west is the Ireland of postcards, with the Cliffs of Moher, the limestone of the Burren and the coastal road around the Ring of Kerry. Castle hotels in Clare and Mayo let you sleep inside the history, and Dublin has Trinity College, the Book of Kells and a lively music scene. Newgrange in the Boyne Valley is older than the pyramids at Giza, and the Shannon offers quiet water for a week by barge.

Explore Ireland's coast, castles and craic

Guided days that show the landscape and the people at their best.

  • Literary Dublin

Walk the city of Joyce, Beckett, Yeats, Wilde and Swift, from its great libraries to the pubs and streets that appear in their work.

  • The west coast by helicopter

Fly west from Dublin over the green midlands to the karst of the Burren and the Atlantic cliffs on a private helicopter flight.

  • Cliffs of Moher and the Burren

Stand on the Atlantic cliffs, then walk the Burren's limestone pavement, where wildflowers and fossils fill the cracks.

  • A morning on the Dingle Peninsula

Follow the coast road around Dingle, stopping at the golden sands of Inch Strand beneath the mountains.

  • Hike Killarney National Park

Walk with a guide past Torc Waterfall to the summit of Torc Mountain for views over the lakes of Killarney.

  • Cork and Blarney Castle

See Cork's university quarter and Saint Fin Barre's Cathedral, then head out to Blarney Castle and its gardens.

  • Forage the woods near Cork

Spend a morning foraging in the woodland with an experienced forager, then sit down to a fireside lunch using what you found.

Choose your Irish counties

Kerry and Clare suit coastal drives, while Dublin and the Boyne Valley suit history and city life.

  • Dublin and Kilkenny

Georgian squares, Trinity College and the pubs of the capital, with Kilkenny's medieval castle a short drive south.

  • The River Shannon

A slow cruise between lakeside villages such as Terryglass and Killaloe, with stone churches and quiet towpaths.

  • Galway and the Atlantic coast

Galway's music and harbour, the Cliffs of Moher and Kenmare's coast in the far south west.

Visit Ireland when the days are longest

Castle hotels and Shannon barges book early for the long summer evenings, so plan ahead.

Fly into Dublin or Shannon

Dublin has non-stop flights from Europe, North America and the Gulf, and Shannon puts you closer to the west.

  • Sydney (one stop): about 24 h
  • Melbourne (one stop): about 24 h
  • Brisbane (one stop): about 25 h
  • Perth (one stop): about 21 h
  • Los Angeles (non-stop): about 10.5 h

Ask about Irish roads and roots

Do we need a visa to visit Ireland?+
Yes, for up to 90 days with many passports, including Australian, US and Canadian. Ireland is outside the Schengen area, so days there do not count toward your Schengen allowance, but crossing into Northern Ireland means many visitors need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change. Your travel expert confirms the rules for your passport when you book.
How do we trace our Irish ancestors on the trip?+
Send us the names, counties and dates you have, and a genealogist can research the records before you fly. The Irish Family History Centre in Dublin helps too, and we plan a visit to the parish your family left.
When is the driest time to visit Ireland?+
Late spring is usually the driest stretch, and May to September brings the longest days and mildest weather. Rain can fall in any month, so pack a waterproof layer whatever the season.
How long should a drive around the west of Ireland take?+
Allow a week for Dublin, the Cliffs of Moher, the Burren and the Ring of Kerry at an easy pace. Ten days lets you add Connemara or a few nights at a castle hotel.
Can we stay in an Irish castle for an anniversary?+
Yes. Castle hotels in Clare, Mayo and Limerick offer suites with four-poster beds, falconry and private dinners in the great hall. Your travel expert can add a private music session or a round of golf for the celebration.
Is it easy to drive on Irish country roads?+
Ireland drives on the left, as in the UK and Australia, but country lanes in the west are narrow and winding. Many travellers prefer a private driver-guide for the Ring of Kerry and the Burren, so they can watch the coast.
What is a barge week on the Shannon like?+
The Shannon is Ireland's longest river, with quiet lakes, the monastic ruins at Clonmacnoise and riverside pubs along the way. A hotel barge cruises a few hours a day, and the crew cook and work the locks.
