Reykjavík, Húsafell and the south coast

7 days · 6 nights

Reykjavík → Hvalfjörður → Húsafell → Þingvellir National Park → Gullfoss → South Coast → Reykjavík

You start in Reykjavík with a live lava show, then soak in sea baths on Hvalfjörður and head inland to Húsafell. From there you enter a vast lava tube and go deep inside the Langjökull glacier. The Golden Circle and the South Coast follow before you return to Reykjavík by way of a geothermal bakery.

Walk on black sand below Iceland's glaciers

On Iceland's south coast, the land still looks newly made. Waves break on black sand at Reynisfjara, waterfalls drop off old sea cliffs at Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, and glacier tongues reach almost to the road. Your guide knows how fast the weather turns here, and each day is shaped around it.

Closer to Reykjavik, Thingvellir sits in the rift where two continental plates pull apart, and Strokkur, in the Geysir field, erupts every few minutes. Husafell, to the north, leads onto the Langjökull ice cap, where a tunnel takes you inside the glacier. In winter the long nights bring the aurora, and a warm lagoon is the best place to wait for it.

Get close to fire and ice

Iceland days your travel expert can build into your trip, each with a local guide.

  • Fly over lava fields and Dettifoss

Take a helicopter over the 2014 Holuhraun lava field, then follow the Jokulsa river canyon to Dettifoss. The flight ends above the shores of Lake Myvatn.

  • Dive the Strytan hot-water vents

Scuba dive to Strytan in Eyjafjordur, a geothermal chimney rising from the seabed that vents water at 80°C into the cold Atlantic, surrounded by marine life.

  • Snowmobile on a glacier

Ride a snowmobile across glacier ice, then watch Strokkur erupt at Geysir and see the double falls of Gullfoss.

  • Dimmuborgir lava and a family farm

Walk among the 2,300-year-old lava towers of Dimmuborgir, then stop at a family farm on the road to Akureyri for its goat's cheese and animals.

  • Hunt the aurora with an astronomer

Sail from Reykjavik's old harbour on a private yacht to dark water 20 minutes out. An astronomer on board explains the science and Norse stories behind the lights.

  • Taste wild-brewed Icelandic beer

Try beers fermented with wild microbes gathered from Icelandic valleys and fields, so each one tastes of the place it came from.

  • Ride into a volcano's magma chamber

Hike for about 50 minutes to Thrihnukagigur, then descend 120 metres by open lift into its empty magma chamber. The volcano last erupted more than 4,000 years ago.

Plan around Reykjavik and the ring road

Most short trips stay in the south-west, within a day's drive of the capital.

  • Reykjavik

A small, colourful capital with the Hallgrímskirkja church, harbour restaurants and the Harpa concert hall on the water.

  • Thingvellir and Husafell

The rift valley where two continental plates pull apart, with lava caves, hot springs and glaciers inland at Husafell.

  • The south coast

Waterfalls at Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, black sand beaches near Vík and glaciers running down to the sea.

Decide between winter and the long days

The aurora shows through the dark months, and June gives near-endless daylight for driving.

  • JanuaryGood

Northern lights and ice caves, very short days and snowy roads.

  • FebruaryGood

Long nights for the aurora, a little more daylight.

  • MarchGood

Aurora still visible, days lengthen quickly.

  • AprilMixed

Changeable spring weather, the aurora season ends.

  • MayGood

Light evenings, fewer visitors and puffins returning.

  • JuneBest

    Midnight sun and green landscapes.

  • JulyBest

Warmest month, all roads and trails open.

  • AugustBest

Long days and the best weather for the highlands.

  • SeptemberGood

Autumn colour and the first northern lights.

  • OctoberGood

Dark nights for the aurora, cooler and wetter.

  • NovemberMixed

Short days and storms, still good for the aurora.

  • DecemberMixed

Only a few hours of daylight, Christmas lights in Reykjavik.

Fly into Keflavik near Reykjavik

Keflavik has direct flights from across Europe and North America, so most routes need one connection at most.

  • Sydney (one stop): about 30 h
  • Melbourne (one stop): about 30 h
  • Brisbane (one stop): about 31 h
  • Perth (one stop): about 22 h
  • Los Angeles (one stop): about 13 h
  • London (non-stop): about 3 h
  • Dubai (one stop): about 11 h

Read up on Iceland's conditions

Does Iceland's Schengen membership affect visitors?+
Yes. Iceland is outside the EU but inside the Schengen area, so Australian, UK, US and Canadian passport holders can visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted together with other Schengen countries. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change. Your travel expert confirms the rules for your passport when you book.
Which months give the best chance of the aurora in Iceland?+
The Northern Lights show from September to early April, on clear, dark nights away from Reykjavik's lights. Weather moves fast here, so a week gives several chances rather than one.
How many days does Iceland's south coast need?+
Five or six days covers the Golden Circle, the waterfalls at Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, and the coast east to the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. The full Ring Road needs ten days or more, especially in winter.
Is it safe to drive in Iceland in winter?+
Winter roads can close quickly for snow, ice and high winds, which is why our Iceland trips use a professional driver and guide. Your guide checks road and weather updates each morning and changes the plan when needed.
Where can we celebrate a birthday in Iceland?+
A private evening at a geothermal lagoon, or an aurora boat trip out of Reykjavik harbour, makes a fine birthday. Your travel expert can add a dinner of Icelandic lamb or langoustine in Reykjavik afterwards.
Is the Blue Lagoon worth it, or are there quieter pools?+
The Blue Lagoon is close to Keflavik airport and easy to fit in on arrival or departure day. Sky Lagoon in Reykjavik and the Secret Lagoon at Flúðir are smaller, and the latter fits well into a Golden Circle day.
What should we wear in Iceland in winter?+
Pack thermal base layers, a warm mid layer and a waterproof, windproof shell, with boots that grip on ice. Bring swimwear too, as every geothermal pool calls for it.
Can you go inside a glacier in Iceland?+
Yes. Natural ice caves on Vatnajökull open roughly between November and March with a specialist guide, and a man-made ice tunnel at Langjökull opens all year.
