Reefs to jaguar country around the world

26 days · 25 nights

Nadi → Hobart → Bali → Mahe Island → Sabi Sand Reserve → Salvador → The Pantanal → Tortuguero National Park

You set off from Kona in Hawaii and fly by private jet to the reefs of Fiji, then on to Tasmania's wildlife and Bali, with a day trip to see Komodo dragons. After a pause in the Seychelles you track the Big Five in the Sabi Sand, take in the rhythms of Salvador and search for jaguars in the Pantanal, ending in the rainforest canals of Tortuguero and finally Fort Lauderdale.

Fly four hours to an island of your own

Fiji feels removed from everything, yet Nadi has direct flights from Australia, New Zealand and the US West Coast, with Sydney and Brisbane about four hours away. A seaplane or boat out of Nadi takes you to a private island resort, where your bure opens onto the sand and the reef starts a few steps from the shore. Days slip past between snorkelling, massages and lunch whenever you are hungry.

Fijian hospitality is a real part of the stay. Staff know your name within a day, and a village visit usually includes a kava ceremony and a lovo feast cooked in an earth oven. The Mamanuca Islands are closest to Nadi and easy to reach, while the Yasawa chain feels further away and quieter still. Divers come for the soft coral of the reefs.

Choose between Nadi and the Mamanucas

Denarau suits a night on arrival, and the Mamanuca Islands are where most guests settle in.

  • Nadi and Denarau

The gateway on Viti Levu's west coast, with local markets, a colourful Hindu temple and Denarau's marina for boats to the islands.

  • The Mamanuca Islands

A chain of small islands a short boat ride from Nadi, with white sand, clear lagoons and snorkelling straight from the beach.

Choose Fiji's drier, cooler months

The middle of the year brings lower humidity and calm seas, while the wet season is hotter with brief storms.

  • JanuaryMixed

Hot and humid, the heart of the wet and cyclone season.

  • FebruaryMixed

Heavy showers and humidity, with cyclones possible.

  • MarchMixed

Still wet and warm, with the cyclone season running until April.

  • AprilGood

Rain eases and the seas settle around green islands.

  • MayBest

Dry season begins, with warm days and lower humidity.

  • JuneBest

Dry, sunny and comfortable, with clear water for snorkelling.

  • JulyBest

Peak dry season, busy with Australian and New Zealand school holidays.

  • AugustBest

Dry and breezy, ideal for sailing and island days.

  • SeptemberBest

Warm and dry, with calm seas and clear skies.

  • OctoberGood

Warming up, mostly dry before the wet season.

  • NovemberMixed

Humidity rises and the cyclone season begins.

  • DecemberMixed

Hot and wet, and busy over Christmas and New Year.

Fly into Nadi, then out to the islands

Nadi has direct flights from Australia, New Zealand and North America, and seaplanes take you on to the islands.

  • Sydney (non-stop): about 4 h
  • Melbourne (non-stop): about 4.5 h
  • Brisbane (non-stop): about 4 h
  • Perth (one stop): about 10 h
  • Los Angeles (non-stop): about 11 h
  • London (one stop): about 24 h
  • Dubai (one stop): about 18 h

Combine Fiji with New Zealand

Nadi is about three hours from Auckland, so a few island days fit easily after a New Zealand trip.

  • New Zealand

Rotorua's hot springs, Marlborough's vines and Queenstown's lakes.

  • Australia

Sydney Harbour, Uluru at sunset and the islands of the reef.

Settle the practical side of Fiji

What do I need to show on arrival in Fiji?+
It depends on your passport, though holiday visitors are usually asked for booked accommodation and a return ticket. Australian passport holders, for example, do not need a tourist visa and receive a visa on arrival for stays under four months. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change. Your travel expert confirms the rules for your passport when you book.
When is cyclone season in Fiji?+
Cyclones are possible between November and April, though most weeks pass with only brief storms. Your travel expert recommends travel insurance that covers weather delays.
How many nights suit Fiji?+
Seven nights suits one island resort. Ten lets you split your time between the Mamanucas and a remote island such as Taveuni or the Yasawas.
How do we reach the outer islands from Nadi?+
Seaplanes and helicopters reach most Mamanuca and Yasawa islands in well under an hour, landing on the lagoon or the resort lawn. Your travel expert times the transfer to your international flight.
Can we have a private island honeymoon in Fiji?+
Yes. Several adults-only islands host only a handful of couples, with bures on the sand and dinners set up on a sandbank. Tell us it is a honeymoon and your travel expert arranges the details.
What happens at a kava ceremony?+
Kava is a drink made from the root of a pepper plant, shared in a village welcome called a sevusevu. Visitors bring a gift of kava root, dress modestly and clap before and after drinking from the shared bowl.
Is Fiji good for snorkelling and diving?+
Yes. The Mamanuca reefs suit snorkelling straight from the beach, while Taveuni's Rainbow Reef and the Somosomo Strait are known for soft coral diving.
