When New York City’s esteemed socialite and fashion icon, Olivia Palermo, showed up to her ownwedding dressed in a cream cashmere sweater and shorts, we couldn’t help but feel like we were missing a crucial piece of the puzzle.
In July 2014, Palermo tied the knot with Johannes Huebl in an understated ensemble, sporting a low ponytail and minimal makeup–we expected a designer wedding dress and instead received the bold statement.
A decade after their civil ceremony, the Founder and CCO of the Olivia Palermo Group and the German model celebrated their 10th anniversary with a weekend extravaganza featuring top-tier culinary experience and (yes!) a show-stopping fashion moment.
The event took place in Baden-Baden, Germany, Johannes’s home country, on June 28th, and the pictures are straight out of a German fairy tale.

“I wore cashmere with feathers and shorts with an overlay skirt [to my civil ceremony],” Olivia tells Vogue. “I always think about the setting for any look I’m wearing and making sure it tells a story, so the look just made sense to me for the occasion.”
The Carolina Herrera custom look worn by Olivia in 2014 felt perfect for the intimate Bedford, New York, setting. The small celebration witnessed by the family and close friends was a spontaneous choice due to their busy schedules during their six-month engagement, with plans for a larger wedding celebration postponed for the future.

Reflecting on her casual choice from back in the day, Olivia connects it to her personal style and her deep connection with fashion, explaining that while she loves weddings, she doesn’t see herself as a traditional bride. “I am much more of a fashion girl—and I am very nontraditional in that sense. I take every opportunity to make something into a fashion moment.”

The looks seen in the two-day event were the creation of the Italian fashion designer Giambattista Valli—a longtime friend of Olivia and the brilliant mind behind numerous epic moments of fashion history, from red carpets, the Oscars, and royal weddings.

“This special moment for Olivia is everything that I love because I don’t really do bridal dresses — I design celebratory, party dresses — and her anniversary is a celebration of the love she shares with Johannes,” Valli shares with PEOPLE. “There are so few people like her that have such precise taste and create such an atmosphere around them and get exactly what I envisioned when designing each of the dresses she chose.”
