Carter Woolley, or popularly known as King Woolz, chose one of Lake Como’s most cinematic settings to ask the question. At Villa Balbiano, the Twitch streamer got down on one knee on the estate’s manicured lakeside lawn, with the mountains stretching across the water and the villa’s grand gardens framing the moment.
His partner, Sydney Nowak, wore a romantic white lace dress for the occasion, but it was the ring that immediately caught attention. Set in warm-toned metal, the design centres on a distinctive elongated stone surrounded by smaller sparkling details, giving the classic engagement ring silhouette a more ornate, unexpected finish.
The whole proposal has a very particular kind of Italian glamour to it: historic architecture, immaculate gardens, a mountain-lined lake and a ring that was clearly chosen to have some personality of its own.
And if this has you mentally relocating your own proposal to Lake Como, the destination is only one piece of the planning puzzle. The right venue, photographer, jeweller and planner can turn a beautiful idea into an actual experience, which is where Wedded Concierge can help connect couples with trusted wedding and proposal experts who fit their vision.

The couple chose one of Lake Como’s most recognisable private estates for the moment.
Villa Balbiano, located in Ossuccio on the western shore of Lake Como, is a historic lakeside estate known for its formal gardens, terraces, statuary and views across the water. Its gardens extend toward the lake, with carefully clipped greenery and architectural details creating a series of picture-perfect spaces.

For Woolz’s proposal, the couple stood on a lawn overlooking the lake, framed by two tall stone pillars. Beyond them, the water stretches toward the mountains, creating a backdrop that really does not need much help from a floral designer.
The location has also become a destination for weddings and other private celebrations, so choosing it for a proposal feels particularly fitting.

Now, onto the ring.
The design centres around a prominent elongated stone set horizontally across the finger, giving it an instantly recognisable silhouette.
Smaller sparkling stones surround the centre, adding more detail to the setting rather than leaving the main stone completely on its own. The warm-toned metal is another standout. The setting appears to be yellow gold, which gives the ring a softer contrast against the bright centre stone.
There are also intricate details around the shoulders of the setting, creating an almost floral effect. Rather than looking completely sleek and minimal, the ring has several layers of detail that become more noticeable the closer you look.
It is a statement without being enormous, which is probably why it feels so interesting.
A centre stone's shape can completely change how an engagement ring feels.
Here, the elongated silhouette makes the ring look more directional and slightly less expected than a traditional round stone. The shape also gives the centre stone plenty of presence while leaving room for the smaller stones and detailed setting to do their thing.
It is a good example of how couples can make a classic engagement ring feel more personal without going completely unconventional. Change the stone shape, add some intricate setting details and suddenly the whole ring has a very different personality.

The setting deserves its own section because, honestly, look at it.
Villa Balbiano's grounds are known for formal Italian gardens, clipped hedges, cypress trees, sculptures and terraces that lead toward the lake. The property has several distinct garden areas, with the architecture and landscaping designed around the water and surrounding landscape.
For the proposal, the couple kept things relatively simple. No enormous floral installation. No giant neon sign. No elaborate aisle. Just a perfectly manicured lawn, an expansive lake, two stone pillars and the mountains beyond.
Sometimes the location really can be the décor.
The soft light across the water also gives the moment a particularly romantic quality, making the whole thing feel more like a scene from a European film than a conventional proposal setup.
The bride-to-be wore a white lace dress with an off-the-shoulder neckline and short sleeves.
The fitted bodice flows into a long, softly draped skirt, with lace detailing covering the dress and giving it a romantic texture. The silhouette feels feminine without being overly formal, which works particularly well for a proposal in a garden rather than a ceremony.
She kept the rest of the look understated, wearing her long dark hair loose in soft waves and pairing the dress with delicate sandals.
It is very much the kind of outfit that says I dressed nicely for a beautiful day rather than I knew I was about to get engaged, which makes the surprise feel even sweeter.
The proposal itself was surprisingly uncomplicated.
Woolz got down on one knee while his partner stood in front of him, before the two celebrated together on the lawn. In another moment, she raises her hand to show off the new ring, while later images capture them kissing against the Lake Como backdrop.
There is something refreshing about the lack of production around it.
The villa is grand. The landscape is dramatic. The ring is intricate. But the actual proposal remains focused on the couple. And really, that is all you need.
Villa Balbiano has become closely associated with luxury celebrations on Lake Como, thanks to its historic architecture, formal gardens and direct relationship with the lake. The property dates back to the late 16th century and has since developed into one of the area's best-known private estates.
So while the ring might be the detail everyone is zooming in on, the setting is doing plenty of work too.
The proposal proves that you do not necessarily need a complicated production to create a memorable moment. Sometimes, the formula is much simpler: find somewhere beautiful, put a very good ring in the mix and ask the question.
Lake Como certainly did not hurt.
