Somewhere in Melbourne right now, there's a dress worth more than most people's houses. It weighs as much as an adult kangaroo. It took six years, two countries and thousands of hand-sewn Swarovski crystals to make. And its designer will tell you, flatly, that you should not wear it to your wedding.
Meet the million-dollar dress, and the man who made it, on the runway at Wedded World Melbourne.
The gown weighs 150 kilograms and features 96,762 hand-sewn Swarovski crystals, first valued at $1 million in 2019, a price that, thanks to six years of inflation and rising labour costs, has only climbed since. Every seam, every crystal, every hem was done by hand. No machine has touched it.
Its creator is Alin Le'Kal, the Melbourne-born, Paris-trained designer whose client list reads less like a lookbook and more like a red carpet. Lindsay Lohan wore his designs on her trips to Australia. Kelly Rowland, Paris Hilton and Meghan Trainor have all worn his pieces. And in March this year, his creation closed the Glam Up Runway show at the PayPal Melbourne Fashion Festival, after a delivery process so complicated it reportedly required its own paperwork just to legally enter the state.
Here's the twist Le'Kal himself admits: this dress was never meant to be worn. It's not a wedding dress. It's proof of what's possible when a designer stops thinking about what a dress should be and starts thinking about what it could be. It's craft as spectacle. And it's exactly the kind of thing you don't get to see up close, unless the runway comes to you.
Which, this November, it does.
