20 Wedding Favour Ideas Guests Will Actually Keep

20 Wedding Favour Ideas Guests Will Actually Keep

The best wedding favour ideas are the ones guests keep, the things they would have bought for themselves, light enough for the carry-on home. Give one good object to every guest and a finer one to the people closest to you, each with a handwritten note.

Your family may call them favours, bomboniere, return gifts or tawzeeat. The 20 ideas below come from named makers and are grouped by who receives them. Sweets live in our bonbonniere ideas and Ladurée macarons in our luxe wedding favours; this list is what flies home.

Key takeaways
  • Settle the head count, tiers and moment before you choose the object.
  • Australia, the UAE and the US cap hand-luggage liquids at 100 ml per container. Most UK airports do too, though a few allow 2 litres.
  • Mark the guest's initials, and keep your names and date off the shared gift.
  • Give the inner circle more, privately, and ship heavy pieces home.
  • Count back from the date the gifts must reach the venue.

Plan the gifts with the guest travel
Your Wedded Advisor arranges guest travel and rooms across countries, so the date your gifts must reach the venue sits in the same timeline as everyone's arrival.

Wedding favour ideas start with five decisions

Settle them in this order, because each one narrows the next:

  1. Count: Give per guest, per adult or per household. Napkins work per household; a card case works per adult. Multiply the unit price by that number, then add about ten per cent for late confirmations.

  2. Tiers: Plan one shared gift for everyone, then a piece for parents, elders, the wedding party or the hosts. Where your family expects a fuller ladder, price every rung before you choose. Make the shared gift good enough that nobody feels they got the lesser version, and give children their own piece, such as the bandana in item 2.

  3. Moment: Choose the room on arrival, the farewell, or a delivery home afterwards.

  4. Travel test: Check weight, liquids, food, wood or plant material, and whether it breaks. Few makers publish weights, so order one sample and weigh it.

  5. Quantity: Few makers publish how many they can make, so ask in writing whether they can deliver your number by your date.

For playful ideas rather than kept ones, see our fun and different favour ideas, and for a lighter footprint, our eco-friendly wedding favours.

Know what clears security and customs

Australia (Home Affairs), the UAE (Dubai Airports), the UK (GOV.UK) and the US (TSA) cap carry-on liquids at 100 ml per container, in one clear bag, though in the UK that applies at most airports and a few allow 2 litres. Wood, plant material and food can need declaring on arrival, and each market's rules sit under "Where you marry".

If a box of mithai or sugared almonds is the gift in your family, give it at the destination, and let a small keepsake be what flies.

For every guest, light enough for hand luggage

Each packs flat or small and carries no liquid. For more travel-sized ideas, see our destination wedding favours. Order one sample before the full run, so you can check the colour, finish and packaging in person.

1. Linen cocktail napkins from an Italian maker

Once Milano sells crushed linen cocktail napkins, 22 x 22 cm, at €44 for a set of four, in 20 standard colours and 15 dyed-to-order shades. Nothing on them names your wedding, so they go straight into the drinks cabinet.

Allow up to 20 working days to make, or 30 for dyed-to-order shades.

2. A bandana hand block-printed in India

Block Shop's Medallion bandana is 21 x 21 inches of organic cotton, hand block-printed in India with AZO-free dyes, at US$40. It works as a neckerchief or a bread basket cover, and suits friends, cousins and children alike.

Block Shop ships to most countries in 5 to 7 business days.

3. A linen handkerchief embroidered with their initials

Gigi and Olive's Personalise Me handkerchief is 25 x 25 cm of washed linen, embroidered by hand in your choice of thread. Use the guest's initials; the wedding lives in your note.

Allow about a week. Gigi and Olive delivers to the UK, the US, Australia and the UAE.

4. A hand-rolled handkerchief for the suit pocket

Drake's white handkerchief is half cotton, half linen, with hand-rolled edges, made in the north of France. A suited guest carries it home in his jacket pocket.

Drake's ships by DHL Express, with duties included for Australia.

5. A silk eye mask for the flight home

Olivia von Halle's Audrey mask is 19 momme silk satin with ivory piping, in a matching silk pouch.

A monogram of up to seven characters takes 4 to 10 working days, and shipping is free worldwide. It packs flat in a handbag and earns its place the moment a guest boards the flight home.

6. Hand-marbled writing paper from Florence

Il Papiro's Pavoni writing paper is marbled by hand in a peacock pattern, 16.5 x 23 cm with envelopes, at €39.50 for ten sheets. Write your note on the first sheet and leave the rest for the guest's own letters.

Il Papiro ships worldwide by DHL in 4 to 9 working days.

7. A leather bookmark stamped with their initials

Smythson's bookmark is 3.5 x 18.5 cm of crossgrain calf, hand-stamped with initials. It slips into whatever the guest reads on the flight home.

Smythson's FAQ adds two working days for personalised leather, which cannot be returned, so proof every set of initials.

8. A leather card case from London or Florence

Ettinger's flat card case, in bridle hide, is 10 x 7.1 x 0.4 cm and weighs 22 g. Ettinger delivers to Australia, the US, the UK and the Middle East, duty paid where it can.

For a Tuscan wedding, Scuola del Cuoio's card holder is handmade in Florence, 6.5 x 9 cm, at €57.38, with a monogram of up to four letters, and ships worldwide within a week.

9. A brass trinket tray made in India

Nicobar's Ele trinket tray is brass, finished in glossy white with a gold rim, 11.4 x 5 cm, at US$25 with import duties included. It holds rings by the basin.

At 330 g it is the heaviest of the hand-luggage pieces. Nicobar ships worldwide in about 10 to 14 business days.

10. A pocket fan with wooden sticks

Duvelleroy's Éventail pocket fan has 19 cm Palo Santo sticks and a cotton leaf, made by hand in Spain for the French fan house, at €105. It earns its place at an outdoor summer ceremony, then lives in a handbag.

The sticks are wood, so tell guests flying into Australia or the US to declare it.

Fragrance that clears airport security

Everything here is solid or well under 100 ml. Eau de parfum carries alcohol, so for guests who avoid it, give the attar, the solid perfume or the wax. Keep each bottle in its box, so it reaches the guest unopened and passes a bag check without fuss.

11. An attar for elders who wear oil perfume

M.L. Ramnarain Perfumers of Kannauj has distilled attar for five generations and sells through Attars India, which ships internationally.

Amouage's Rose Aqor is a 12 ml attar at 100 per cent oil concentration. The 12 ml size shows as sold out on Amouage's page, so confirm stock before you plan around it. Amouage engraves selected fragrances, in up to three business days.

12. Eau de parfum in a 10 ml bottle

Floris makes Neroli Voyage eau de parfum in a 10 ml bottle with a gold cap, a light citrus scent for a summer wedding.

Floris delivers worldwide in about 10 to 15 working days. At 10 ml, it sits well inside the 100 ml cabin limit.

13. Solid perfume in a refillable case

Diptyque's Do Son solid perfume is 3 g of infused cold wax in a refillable case, so nothing goes in the liquids bag.

Diptyque ships only within the country its site serves and has no Australian or UAE site. Buy it at home and carry it, so it suits a small inner circle, not a full guest list.

14. A scented wax tablet for the wardrobe

Diptyque's Figuier wax oval is a 13 x 15 cm tablet that scents a wardrobe for at least three months, with no flame. It suits a guest who doesn't wear scent; item 13's country limits apply. Wrap each tablet in tissue, so the scent stays fresh until the guest opens it.

For parents, elders and the wedding party

Have a family member take these to the room, or hand them over before the farewell. Given that way, the piece reads as thanks for a role, not a rank at the table. For the oldest guests, choose a piece that is light to hold, such as the enamel box, the scarf or the attar.

15. A hand-rolled silk scarf from Greece

Mia Papa's Parthenon Classic is Soufli silk, hand-printed with rolled edges, at €150 for the 45 cm square and €230 for the 90 cm. Give the small square to bridesmaids and the large one to mothers.

Its shipping policy leaves duties outside the EU with the recipient.

16. A silver-plated box for five sugared almonds

Christofle's silver-plated pear box is 5 cm high, weighs 100 g and can be engraved. A typical Italian bomboniera, The Local Italy explains, holds at least five sugared almonds, for health, wealth, happiness, fertility and longevity.

Fill it with five; the almonds are eaten and the box stays. If guests keep halal, ask your confectioner to confirm the coating and filling, and where guests share several faiths, keep crosses, saints and verses off the box.

17. A handmade enamel box from England

Halcyon Days' Wedding Bells box is 46 mm across, handmade in England, at £225, or £300 personalised and made to order in four weeks. It belongs on a grandmother's dressing table.

Halcyon Days delivers internationally by UPS in about 10 working days.

18. A leather trinket case for travelling jewellery

Smythson's small square trinket case is 6.2 x 3.7 x 6.2 cm in crossgrain calf, lined in suede. Stamped with her initials, it holds a mother's earrings for the trip home. Order the initials early, because stamping adds time before delivery.

Heavier pieces to ship home after the wedding

Hand over a card at the venue, send the object home, and collect addresses with the RSVP. A card at the place setting tells each guest the gift is on its way. Ship to the address on the RSVP rather than the hotel, so nothing goes astray after checkout.

19. A hand-finished plate from an Italian studio

Laboratorio Paravicini's Metalia bread plate is 16 cm of thin white earthenware, turned on a lathe and decorated by hand, at €50 in a gift box with an optional message card.

Paravicini's terms give 7 to 45 working days, so order a season ahead. Ship it to each guest's home rather than handing it over at the reception.

20. A walnut mabkhara inlaid with mother of pearl

Levantiques' Nada Mabkhara I is a walnut incense burner with mother-of-pearl inlay and a brass tray, 35 cm high, at AED 1,000. It is available by order and ships worldwide.

It is a gift for hosts or elders, too fine for a suitcase, so have it shipped to their home with bukhoor from the family's own perfumer.

Get the gifts to the venue on time

Our wedding planning checklist has favours with the venue one to two weeks before the wedding, so count back from that date. Ship to the venue, not home. Within the EU, Once Milano's terms put no duties on the box; from outside the EU, agree in writing who pays duty.

Name one person to receive, count, store and lay out the delivery. Ask the hotel or villa:

  • Does it accept guest deliveries before you arrive, and how many days ahead?

  • Does it charge to take an item to each room?

Then plan for what goes wrong:

  • Solid perfume and wax soften in a sunny room, so store boxes somewhere cool.

  • Misspelt initials are the usual error, so proof the list twice and order a few spares blank.

Where you marry

Each market adds its own rules and costs. Prices change, so confirm when you book.

Australia

Australia's biosecurity rules require wooden items to be declared and inspected, and allow fully tanned leather goods. Of these 20, only the fan, the almonds in item 16 and the mabkhara are wood or nuts, which guests declare if they carry them.

For 70 guests in 35 households, Once Milano napkins come to €1,540. Ten Christofle pear boxes for the inner circle, at A$400 each with customs fees covered, add A$4,000. Mud Australia's handmade Salt Dish, from A$24, ships home from Sydney.

UAE

Hospitality comes first, and a ladder of gifts is expected. Gulf families call them tawzeeat, often oud, bukhoor or a small mabkhara, handed to each guest by family or attendants. Bateel has a wedding gifts range, sets from AED 140 for the Cassandra and a corporate team that customises them; ask it to confirm halal certification for every piece.

Oud and bukhoor are among the gifts handed to guests at Gulf weddings. Photo: Vldsx . (Pexels)

For 220 guests, a ladder might begin with Bateel Cassandra sets for wide family at AED 30,800; move to Ajmal's Dahn Al Oudh, AED 240 for 3 ml, for 40 close family at AED 9,600; then Christofle boxes at AED 950 for 15 elders, AED 14,250; and end with Amouage attars, from AED 2,150, for parents. Those first three rungs total AED 54,650. At the henna evening, give the women item 15's small silk square (€150) or the Ajmal oil, and ask in writing whether each oil is alcohol-free. If your family expects your names, put them on the elders' boxes in gold lettering.

Dubai Customs allows a traveller gifts to AED 3,000 of a personal nature, not in commercial quantities. Carried into Dubai, 220 matching boxes would read as commercial, so have makers ship them to the venue. For Greece, custom packaging generally takes four to six weeks, and a shipment from Dubai enters the EU, so agree who pays duty. European guests may find oud heavy, so give them the rose attar or item 12's neroli.

UK

For 140 guests, Gigi and Olive handkerchiefs at £26 come to £3,640, and fifteen Christofle boxes at £185 add £2,775. In sterling, Drake's handkerchief is £55, the Smythson bookmark £55 and the Ettinger case £155.

If your family says return gift and you marry in Rajasthan, buy at source, and treat these as a starting list. In Jaipur, Anokhi and Soma hand block-print, and Soma ships abroad by DHL; Kilol prints stoles in-house. Ask each for a stole or napkin set, a price for 140, a ready date in writing, and delivery to the palace hotel, addressed to your named contact.

GOV.UK allows £390 of other goods duty-free, and bars meat and dairy from outside the EU.

US

For 90 guests, Smythson bookmarks at $80 come to $7,200, and twelve Christofle boxes at $225 add $2,700. Drake's handkerchief is $85. For your notes, Dempsey and Carroll's Our #3 card is $490 for 100 from an existing plate, in 8 to 12 weeks.

Guests back from at least 48 hours abroad have an $800 exemption; gifts count toward it and must be declared, as must plant products.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good wedding favour?
A good wedding favour is one object your guest would have bought for themselves, such as linen, leather, silk, silver or a small fragrance. It should be light, flat and unbreakable, with any liquid under 100 ml, so it survives the flight home. Mark it with the guest's initials or a handwritten note, rather than your names and date.
What to do instead of wedding favours?
Give a welcome gift in the guest's room on arrival, or send a gift to their home after the wedding. Both reach guests at a moment they notice. A donation alone can read as no gift at all, so if you give to a charity in guests' names, pair it with one small object and a handwritten note.
What are the gifts at weddings called?
In Australia and the UK they are wedding favours, and in the US, favors. Italian families say bomboniere, and in the Gulf they are tawzeeat, often oud or bukhoor. Indian families often say return gifts, and a cash blessing in an envelope is shagun. At a destination wedding, a welcome gift in the room can replace the table favour.
How much should I budget for wedding favours?
Multiply the unit price by your count unit, then add about ten per cent spare. For 70 guests in 35 households, one Once Milano napkin set each is €1,540 before delivery. Budget the inner circle separately, for example ten silver-plated boxes for parents and elders. Prices change, so confirm when you book.
Should the favour go in the welcome bag?
If you already plan a welcome bag, make the keepsake its centrepiece rather than giving a second gift at dinner. A gift left on the dinner seat can be cleared away with the place settings, while one in the room travels home in the suitcase. Add a handwritten note, and keep the rest of the bag light.
