There are weddings where the flowers are beautiful, the dress is stunning and everyone has a great time. Then there are weddings where you can actually feel the couple in every detail.
Drew Afualo and Pili Tanuvasa’s Hawaiian wedding was firmly in the latter category.
The content creator and The Comment Section podcast host married her longtime partner after nine years together, sharing glimpses of a celebration that was equal parts romantic, fashion-forward, emotional and unmistakably personal. The couple announced their engagement in September 2024 before finally making it official in Hawaii, surrounded by family, friends and a seriously internet-famous wedding party.
But while the custom looks, tropical scenery and guest list certainly gave the internet plenty to talk about, one of the wedding's most meaningful moments came when Drew performed a taualuga, fulfilling a dream she had long held for her own wedding day.
Before the wedding content came the engagement, and before the engagement came nearly a decade together.
Drew and Pili have been officially dating for nine years, with a history that stretches back even further. When they announced their engagement in 2024, Pili jokingly referenced the fact that Drew had once turned down his prom invitation years earlier. Apparently, the plot twist was always going to be marriage.
On August 23, Drew revealed that the couple had tied the knot in Hawaii, sharing official portraits and behind-the-scenes moments from the day. Pili kept his own announcement sweet and simple: husband and wife.
After nine years, the wedding did not feel like the beginning of a romance. It felt more like the next chapter of one that had already built its own history, inside jokes and very committed fan base.
Drew’s wedding dress was custom-made by Cult Gaia, and it had all the drama required of a wedding look without losing its sense of ease.
The gown featured a softly draped, strapless bodice with a sculptural silhouette, subtle waist cutouts and a voluminous skirt that pooled dramatically across the grass. It was modern and architectural while still reading unmistakably bridal. Paired with a long, flowing veil and a lush bouquet of white orchids and greenery, the look struck a balance between clean white minimalism and the richness of the Hawaiian setting.
Pili also wore a custom Cult Gaia look, while the wedding party coordinated in deep chocolate tones, creating a warm contrast against the white florals and surrounding greenery.
The ceremony itself looked like a scene designed by someone who understood that Hawaii does not need much help being beautiful.
Guests gathered outdoors along an aisle surrounded by layers of tropical foliage, palms and white flowers. Large monstera leaves and abundant greenery created an immersive garden-like setting, while the ceremony backdrop opened up to the island landscape beyond.
The overall palette stayed grounded in nature: lush greens, crisp whites and earthy chocolate tones. White parasols added another visual flourish among the guests, while the low sunlight gave the ceremony a warm, golden-hour glow.
It was tropical, yes, but never leaned into theme-park destination wedding territory. The setting felt expansive and relaxed, with the landscape doing much of the visual heavy lifting.
Among the wedding's most powerful moments was Drew's performance of the taualuga, a traditional Samoan dance with deep ceremonial and cultural significance.
The taualuga is traditionally associated with celebration and completion, often performed toward the conclusion of an important gathering or social occasion. Its graceful movements and storytelling quality make it a particularly meaningful form of cultural expression. The Smithsonian describes it as a traditional solo dance often performed at the end of a celebration, with the name itself carrying associations with the completion of a significant undertaking.
For Drew, this was not simply a performance added to the wedding programme.
“Getting to perform a taualuga at my wedding has always been a dream of mine,” she shared, describing the moment as being “for the culture” and thanking the artists and collaborators who helped bring it to life.
The photographs and footage showed her and Pili in elaborate ceremonial-inspired looks incorporating bold greenery, woven elements and bird-of-paradise flowers. Drew's towering floral headdress and leaf-covered ensemble transformed the moment into something theatrical, celebratory and deeply rooted in heritage.
It was also a reminder of something increasingly important in modern weddings: culture does not have to sit quietly in the background. It can be part of the main event.
Of course, Drew and Pili's inner circle also came prepared.
Fellow creators and close friends including Tefi Pessoa, Brittany Broski, Alex French and Caleb Hearon were among those celebrating the couple and appearing as part of the wedding party. The weekend became something of a content creator reunion, but the social media moments still seemed to orbit around one thing: genuine excitement for two people everyone clearly loves.
And perhaps that is what made the wedding feel so special through the screen. For all the custom fashion, beautiful scenery and viral potential, the celebration still looked like it belonged to Drew and Pili.
It was loud in the best way, emotional when it needed to be and completely unafraid to make space for culture alongside celebration.
