When Should You Start Planning Your Honeymoon

When Should You Start Planning Your Honeymoon

Your wedding day is fast approaching, and you’re undoubtedly excited about celebrating your love with friends and family. However, amidst the wedding preparations, it’s crucial not to forget about planning your honeymoon. The honeymoon is a special time for newlyweds to relax, unwind, and create cherished memories together. But when should you start planning your honeymoon? We’ll provide some essential tips and guidelines to help you make the most of your honeymoon planning experience.

1. The Timeline: 6-8 Months in Advance

As a general rule of thumb, couples should begin booking their honeymoon accommodations and transportation at least 6-8 months in advance. This includes everything from hotel rooms to train tickets to plane tickets. For some destinations, it’s even advised to start booking up to 12 months ahead of time. While it may seem a bit early to plan your trip while still organizing your nuptials, this timeline is essential, especially if you’re unsure about your destination.

2. Choosing the Right Destination:

With the world as your oyster, choosing a honeymoon destination can be a daunting task. If you have a myriad of choices and aren’t sure where to go, consider opting for a destination neither of you has been to that offers activities you both enjoy. This ensures that your honeymoon caters to your preferences and interests.

3. Timing Is Everything:

When planning your honeymoon, it’s vital to ensure that your travel dates align with your chosen destination. For instance, many coastal European hotels and restaurants are closed during the off-season, so traveling there in February or March wouldn’t make sense. Likewise, destinations in the Southern Hemisphere, like Australia, have opposite seasons from the U.S., so you may need to travel during North America’s winter to experience their summer.

Additionally, it’s essential to avoid monsoon seasons in tropical locales such as Costa Rica and be aware of other significant annual events that may impact your trip, such as the burning season in Thailand’s Chiang Mai during February-April.

4. Booking Early: Avoiding Disappointment

The most affordable rooms and specialty suites, such as those with private plunge pools, tend to sell out quickly. To avoid disappointment, it’s advisable to book your accommodations well in advance. Hotels usually release pricing and availability eight to 12 months ahead, while flights become available around 10 months before your departure date.

If you plan to use credit card points for flights, be prepared to book as soon as the option opens up, as airlines often limit the number of award tickets available per flight.

5. Flexibility Equals Savings:

If you’re looking to save money on your honeymoon, flexibility with your travel dates and destination is key. Whenever possible, consider checking into hotels on Sunday or Monday, as you’ll often pay a lower rate than if you were checking in on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday.

6. Timing Your Departure:

Traditionally, couples used to leave for their honeymoon immediately after the wedding. However, busy schedules, work commitments, and other friends’ weddings have changed the game. If a different season or timeframe makes more sense for your dream destination, don’t hesitate to postpone your honeymoon. This way, you’ll have something to look forward to when you come down from Cloud Nine. If you do plan to leave right away, we recommend waiting at least one to two days after the wedding to depart. Trying to catch a 9 am flight after a night of dancing can be quite challenging.

Your honeymoon is a special journey that marks the beginning of your married life. Proper planning ensures that you create unforgettable memories without any hiccups along the way. Start early, choose your destination wisely, consider timing and flexibility, and remember to prioritize your own comfort and enjoyment. By doing so, you’ll embark on a honeymoon that’s perfect for you and your partner, ensuring a blissful start to your new life together.
