Aussie Couple Funding Their Entire Wedding From 10-cent Refunds From Recycling Cans

As we all know, planning your dream wedding really does take a whole village, but it all comes with a price! This couple from Queensland found a creative way to make quick savings just from recycling cans!

Leonie Starr and her fiancé Matthew Porter recycled over 810,000 bottles and from every item they received 10 cents, which helped them put towards their savings for their dream wedding. In 5 months, the couple have already saved $6000 and began their recycling journey on the 1stNovember 2018.

The couple are planning on tying the knot and saying ‘I do’ in Vanuatu in 2020, and we are so excited to see their dream wedding come to life. Leonie and Matthew first began researching the cost of hiring a quiet, private island in Vanuatu for a total of 35 guests to spend 6 nights for the duration of their wedding, and the two were absolutely gobsmacked when they put everything together. “Including the actual wedding which is $5,000 it came to $81,000. My partner nearly fell off the couch!” Leonie said to VT.

Although this journey comes with its challenges, the couple are defying the odds and surprising themselves with how far they have come. “For me, to reach my huge goal of 810,000 bottles, I would need to be taking home 2,200 bottles a day. I’m averaging about 10,000 per month so far. Since hitting 50,000 bottles and having the wedding now paid for entirely out of 10 cent containers, my main goal is to get as close to 810,000 as I can”. Explains Leonie to VT.

We are so excited to see this couple’s dream wedding happening next year! Good luck to Leonie and Matthew!

Ps, you can help any couple grow their wedding/honeymoon funds by setting up a card through the app GiftWell that all can contribute to!
