Some weddings feel like polished productions. Wei and Louise’s reception did the opposite. It felt like someone cracked open a vintage camcorder, shook out all the warm tones and grainy textures, and let the night unfold in the exact rhythm of a great party.
Held at The HIGHLINE Venue’s Ruby Ballroom, their celebration embraced a retro-leaning, film-shot aesthetic that made even the smallest moments look like stills from a very cool, very chaotic, very stylish art film.
The couple invited 140 guests into a space designed to feel warm, intimate, and intentionally unpolished. Every detail leaned into texture and mood. Nothing felt staged, yet everything looked cinematic. You could feel it in the candlelight, in the soft drapery that framed the room, and in the way the couple moved through the night with a looseness that only comes from being surrounded by people you love.
If most weddings aim to be perfect, Wei and Louise aimed for real. And somehow, real turned out more beautiful than perfection ever could.
The Ruby Ballroom at The HIGHLINE Venue has a reputation for being one of Sydney’s most decadent yet intimate event spaces.
For Wei and Louise, it became the beating heart of their celebration. Instead of isolating themselves on an elevated stage, the couple chose to sit among family and friends. This small decision completely changed the tone of the night. The ballroom felt less like a formal reception and more like a shared living room filled with music, dancing, and good chaos.
The stage, freed from its traditional role, transformed into a feature zone for the night’s most photographed moments. The champagne tower shimmered like a retro movie prop, the lion dancers brought an electric cultural beat, and guests flowed in and out of the space like it was a revolving set built solely for their joy.
This freedom created a reception that breathed. Guests moved, mingled, posed, danced, and toasted under gentle warm lighting that made every corner look romantic.
The HIGHLINE styling team leaned gently into the couple’s brief of “film texture with art deco romance.” Pearls and beaded accents added subtle glamour.
The florals blended fresh blooms with premium faux pieces to create layers and depth without overwhelming the room. Draping softened the architecture and added movement to the space. Sand-weighted candles in different heights cast a vintage glow that pulled everything together.
The result was a reception that never tried too hard. Every backdrop looked editorial. Every shot felt candid. Every styling detail supported the couple’s preference for a night that felt authentic, tactile, and effortlessly cool.
Guests were served a nine course Chinese banquet that paid homage to family traditions while still fitting the relaxed feel of the night.
Steamed scallops, crab and pike maw soup, lobster noodles, and HIGHLINE’s cult-favorite fried seafood rolls set the tone for a dinner that felt indulgent and comforting all at once. Mango sago replaced the usual red bean dessert for a fresh, modern twist.
The drinks never stopped flowing. The champagne tower, layered with dried florals and glowing glasses, became a centerpiece of both the styling and the celebration. It was less of a moment and more of a recurring event throughout the night.
Captured by filmbygirls, every photo leaned into candid storytelling. Their signature moody approach fit the couple’s concept perfectly. Instead of traditional portraits, the night unfolded in snippets.
Champagne pouring, friends cheering mid-dance, Louise spinning in a mini lace dress, Polaroids in hand, soft focus, grain, laughter, movement. It was honest. It was messy in the best way. And it preserved the essence of the night exactly as it happened.
Wei and Louise’s Ruby Ballroom reception proved that weddings don’t need to be pristine to be beautiful. They just need to feel like you.
With warm lighting, retro flair, intentional imperfection, and a room that encouraged real interaction, they created a celebration that felt intimate, modern, cultural, and wildly fun.
It’s the kind of wedding people don’t just remember. They feel it.
