Prince William and Prince Harry have paid tribute to their mother the late Princess Diana in an emotional and informal ceremony on the 20th anniversary of her death. Returning to the gates of Kensington Palace, Diana’s former home, William and Harry took a moment to lay flowers at her memorial and reflect of the memory of their beloved mother.
Harry and William were just 12 and 15 years old when we last saw them at Kensington’s gates, with hearts across the world breaking as they farewelled their mother and tried to come to terms with their loss. They returned yesterday on an impromptu visit to thank well-wishers and pay their respects, slowly making their way down the line of photographs and moving messages that had been laid outside the Palace.
The solemn visit was reminiscent of the shock and heartbreaking outpouring of grief following Diana’s fatal car accident back in August 1997, which was followed by the tragic funeral procession five days later.
Prince William and Prince Harry were accompanied by Kate the Duchess of Cambridge, with the trio setting aside some time to peacefully tour the palace’s sunken garden, which was transformed in their mother’s honor, with thousands of her favourite flowers commemorating her extraordinary life.
Earlier this month Prince William revealed his hurt and confusion during his mother’s funeral, telling the Telegraph, “They were shouting and literally wailing at us…I was like, ‘You didn’t even know her.'”
“Now looking back, over the last few years I’ve learned to understand what it was she gave the world and a lot of people.”
