The engagement ring scene can get pretty exhilarating, bearing similar trend cycles to the fashion industry. Every now and then, a new trendy detail or design emerges, spiking interest and demand among jewelry brands. Such trends can be as subtle as diamond cuts and settings, or as overt as entirely unique designs.

Lately, elongated shapes like oval and marquise cuts have been all the rage, sometimes featuring halo or bezel settings. On the other end of the spectrum, colored gemstones have been making a mark, like sapphires, rubies, and emeralds, often serving as centerpieces for more elaborate ensembles–think toi et moi or diamond clusters.

Trends can easily sway public opinion and directly impact a couple’s choices. For example, Selena Gomez’s engagement with Benny Blanco caused a frenzy for marquise cut diamonds, according to fine jewelry brand Michael Arthur. There was also a whole sensation surrounding Zendaya’s 5.02-carat cushion-cut diamond positioned horizontally, leading In Style to declare it the “top diamond trend of 2025.”
The power of timelessness
While trends can be exciting, it’s also important to look back on timeless designs before jumping into decisions. Rings are forever investments, after all, and it’s safe to select classic pieces in case your preferences or aesthetic changes over time. Examples of these are solitaire rings in a round cut or princess cut, cathedral settings, and three-stone trilogy designs. Of course, plain polished bands and pavé bands are also foolproof choices.
“Embracing a trend, especially if you’re a young couple, is perhaps a natural thing,” says jewelry designer Nadia Neuman, founder of Mondial. “But it’s important to remember that an engagement ring is a purchase which marks an occasion which is going to last a lifetime. It’s not like buying fast fashion or this year’s trainers.”

Marrying trends and classic styles
Knowing trends and understanding timeless elements are key to crafting your dream ring. That way, you have a repertoire of details to choose from and curate in a way that is personally meaningful to you.
“A ring design should be the perfect blend between classic elements and modern trends,” says Jacque Jarjo, who owns Jacque Fine Jewellery. “This can be achieved when the ring concept remains timeless yet a subtle, trendy touch is added.”
1. Add subtle design elements.

You can incorporate trends in a way that doesn’t directly duplicate what you see on social media. This way, it’s a design you can proudly call your own.
For example, instead of diamond clusters, go for a trendy oval or marquise center diamond in a three-stone design. Or, try a classic round diamond accented with smaller stones on a cathedral setting. Coloured gemstones on simple settings are also a sensible option.
2. Get inspiration from heirloom pieces.

If you have heirloom jewelry from the family, it can serve as the perfect foundation for your inspiration, and you can modernize as you please. How about an emerald on a mixed metal band? Or a cushion cut with a halo setting?
3. Customize with symbolic elements.

There’s no better place to find inspiration than your relationship. Look back at your fondest memories or milestones and think of details that could best symbolize them. You can add your birthstones, engravings, or pair stones together in a way that reflects your commitment.
Expert tip: Before anything else, make sure to choose the right boutique and fit designs yourself.
Whether or not you’re interested in injecting trendy details, it’s important to try rings in person to see what suits you.
“We have had lots of people start trying on the marquise diamond engagement ring, however some clients have said that it just isn’t them, or looks nice in photos but different on the hand when tried on,” says Michael Arthur of the eponymous diamond jewelry brand. “Hence, it is so important, and also so common these days, to come into the boutique and try on all shapes and sizes before letting your partner know which is the perfect choice for you.”
Before checking out designs though, selecting the right jeweler is key to ensuring a high-quality, durable ring that’s worth the investment.
“Making a ring timeless is all about the design and materials used,” shares Neuman. “Remember that quality gemstones and diamonds can be reset into new designs in the future, allowing you to update your ring’s style while preserving the value of your stones.”
Ask yourself: Is this something that truly resonates with me?
At the end of the day, whatever cuts and settings you’ll be adopting, what truly matters is personal relevance. A ring isn’t simply an accessory but a tangible, precious manifestation of your love and commitment to one another as a couple. As long as the design checks all those marks, then you know you’re making the right choice.
