WHAT REALLY GOES ON: A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A STYLIST

Adele, Decorative Events & Exhibitions‘ (DE&E) Manager of Wedding Styling, and her team works tirelessly to ensure every wedding is delivered to perfection, and when we got chatting to this power-woman, what we really wanted to know is – what does her work day look like?

Meet with our DE&E floral team at the flower markets to see what is available this week and place orders for this coming weekend’s weddings. Some flowers, such as roses and lilies need to be purchased from the market several days prior to the wedding to ensure the blooms open and blossom to the perfect degree, for optimal beauty and consistency and this needs to be done in a controlled environment.

Pick up a much needed coffee on the way from market to the office.

Attend the Wedding team meeting to discuss the previous weekend’s bridal consultations. Our florists, Head Decorator and Creative Director attend these meetings to ensure our designs and concepts are developed with DE&E’s unique creative fusion, drawing on everyone’s experience, expertise and passion.

The Creative Director and I then join the Head Stylists and Creative Sales Executives in our daily Top Design meeting where we discuss all large briefs received across the company, from weddings to Visual Merchandising, Activations, Event Styling and Exhibition stand builds. This is a think tank where we collaborate amongst fabric swatches, paint samples, floral mocks, sketches and inspirational images to ensure we are consistently innovating and pushing our design capabilities.2

My assistant and I visit our Hire warehouse (or as I like to call it Aladdin’s cave because it’s full of treasures) and our custom workshop to ensure everything is on track and on brief for this coming weekend’s weddings. Today includes signing off the artwork of a fabric print we’ve designed which our in-house printing and linen department will turn into cushions which will adorn one of our couples wedding lounge settings, featuring their beloved puppy dogs …a perfect personal touch for their special day.

The afternoon is a whirlwind of meetings!! First up I meet with one of our fabric wholesalers to review fabric swatches alongside one of our lovely wedding planner clients and our seamstress, as we are ready to finalise some fabulous custom table cloths. Closely following I hit the road for two venue site inspections squeezing in some paperwork and the sourcing of an outdoor cast iron pagoda back at the office before meeting with our style team to discuss shoot ideas of the next issue of Decorative Empire, our bi-annual event styling publication.

I literally run out of the office to the launch event for The Residence in Centennial Park with one of our favourite caterers ARIA Catering.

A champagne and visit to the dessert buffet seem well deserved before I call it a day and meander  through the gardens on the way home….although it seems there’s no rest for the wicked, I find myself snapchatting my work colleagues as inspiration strikes, a new colour scheme found amongst the perennials!
