The twelve stays below are grouped by region, closest first. Each one has a fireplace, a mineral bath, a spa or snow on the doorstep, and every price comes from the property's own website, checked on 30 October 2026. Prices are in Australian dollars.

Yarra Valley, About an Hour Away

1. Chateau Yering Hotel, Yering

Chateau Yering sits on the Melba Highway, just under an hour from Melbourne's CBD. In winter, book the Yering Suite for its lounge with a gas log fireplace, or the Yarra Suite for its oversized spa bath. The hotel doesn't publish rates online, so ask for a winter quote when you enquire.

2. Balgownie Estate, Yarra Glen

Balgownie's Winter Wind Down is made for a slow weekend: an overnight stay, buffet breakfast for two, a $50 credit at Restaurant 1309 and an 11am late checkout, from $406. It's offered for direct bookings in June, July and August 2027. There's an endota spa on site if you want a treatment while you're there.

Mornington Peninsula and the Bellarine

The Mornington Peninsula is about an hour from the city, and Geelong, the gateway to the Bellarine, is just over an hour's drive.

3. Lancemore Lindenderry, Red Hill

Lindenderry is among the vines at Red Hill, an hour's drive from the CBD, and its guest lounges are warmed by a fire through winter. The Embers and Wine package adds mulled wine and s'mores for two, daily breakfast, an 11am checkout and a third night free. It runs from April to September, and the price is quoted when you book.

4. Jackalope Hotel, Merricks North

Jackalope has a Lair Suite with a double-sided fireplace that opens to both the room and the terrace, plus a heated spa and infrared sauna for every guest. The Nocturne package starts at $1,050 a stay. It includes two martinis and half a dozen oysters on arrival, a tasting-menu dinner for two in the hatted restaurant and breakfast the next morning. The hotel is for guests 12 and over.

5. Lon Retreat & Spa, Point Lonsdale

At Lon, the water in the heated mineral pool and hot soak comes from natural springs running beneath the farm. Its two-night wellness packages start from $2,950 for a couple, with all meals, a 90-minute spa treatment and a wellness consultation. Lon is an adult retreat for guests 16 and over.

Daylesford and Hepburn Springs, 80 Minutes Away

Spa Country is where Victoria's mineral springs rise. The Hepburn Bathhouse has welcomed bathers to the original Hepburn Springs spa since 1895.

6. Lake House, Daylesford

Lake House is 80 minutes from Melbourne, in the heart of Spa Country. Its Spa and Atrium villas have open fires, guests can book a soak in the tree-top mineral baths, and there's live jazz every Friday through winter. The Lake House Getaway starts from $498 per person, twin share, for one night in a Lodge Studio with a multi-course dinner and breakfast, Sunday to Thursday.

7. Clifftop at Hepburn, Hepburn Springs

Clifftop at Hepburn is a set of private villas built for couples, and the Samurai villas centre on a striking fireplace. According to its tariff sheet, a Clifftop villa is $599 a night Sunday to Thursday and a Samurai villa $499, with a two-night minimum. The Samurai and Solitude villas take no children, so it's just the two of you.

8. Shizuka Ryokan, Hepburn Springs

Shizuka is a Japanese-style inn with a private bathing courtyard, booked for up to two guests at a time. Its deep hinoki tub holds magnesium-rich water kept between 40 and 42°C. A bed and breakfast stay starts from $359. The Bed, Breakfast & Bathing package, from $503, adds a 45-minute Japanese bathing ritual each night of your stay.

The Grampians and Dunkeld

The Grampians sit about three hours west of Melbourne along the Western Freeway.

9. Boroka Downs, Halls Gap

Each of the five residences at Boroka Downs is for one couple only, which makes it one of the most private stays on this list. A large circular double spa sits behind two glass walls, and heat lamps take the edge off chilly winter mornings. Rates aren't published online, so check availability on the property's site.

10. Royal Mail Hotel, Dunkeld

The Royal Mail Hotel is in Dunkeld, at the southern end of the Grampians. Its Deluxe Mount Sturgeon cottage, 5km from the hotel, is built around a wood fireplace. For food, the Mid Week Getaway is from $1,700 per couple, with two nights in a Mountain View Room and dinner at both Parker St Project and Wickens.

The High Country

11. Lancemore Milawa, Milawa

On the edge of the King Valley, around three hours from Melbourne, Lancemore Milawa keeps a crackling fire going in the lounges. Its Embers and Wine package has the same mulled wine, s'mores, breakfast and free third night as Lindenderry's, from April to September. Pair it with a day of tastings in the King Valley.

12. Mt Buller Chalet Hotel & Suites, Mt Buller

For snow, Mt Buller is only three hours from Melbourne, and the Mt Buller Chalet is ski-in, ski-out, just metres from the Bourke St ski run. After a day on the slopes, there's a spa, steam room, sauna and indoor heated pool. The 2026 season ran from 6 June to 6 September, so plan for next winter and book early.
