The Proposal

Dee and Rob went on their first date in Surry Hills in 2017. Rob spun around balancing a black wooden umbrella on his index finger as he saw Dee for the first time. Within an hour, Rob proposed to Dee (though he swears it was a joke). However, their story continued, and in June 2020, Rob proposed for real during a trip to Byron Bay, where he surprised Dee with a beautiful breakfast and a fun little game. Rob has a journal that he writes in French and he took all of the journal entries from the beginning of their relationship and asked Dee to translate them to English. ‘So many of the entries were about how excited he was to have met me and how he was enamoured with me and the way that we are together’ says Dee.

The Wedding Preparations

The couple had been engaged for almost a year and a half and had put off wedding planning because of the pandemic. However, they realized that there was no use waiting any longer, and decided to plan their wedding for the following autumn. Dee planned her wedding in six months, and her greatest concern was finding a dress she loved. She tried on several dresses at different stores, but it wasn’t until she tried on the Adalyn at Luv Bridal that she knew she had found the one. The Adalyn was the perfect combination of elegance, sexy and princess that made her feel on top of the world on her wedding day.

The couple chose the beautiful Bargo venue, Kalinya Estate, for their wedding. The estate was the perfect location to bring their closest friends and family together in celebration of love, including loved ones who travelled from the USA and Ghana. The ceremony was held outside in the gardens, which perfectly matched the rustic boho vibe of the wedding. The stairs outside the main house and the walkway made the perfect aisle and helped to create a romantic and intimate atmosphere. All of the vendors were incredible, especially Mandy from Kalinya Estate, who brought constant good vibes and took it upon herself to ensure that their wedding was a success.

Rob wore a classic black tie suit from Politix, which he paired with custom-made personalized cuff links and loafers from Dune London. His watch was an engagement present from Dee, which she used to propose to him on a trip through Cairns. His tailored pants were swapped for dancing pants during the reception, which allowed him to dance the night away with Dee.

Dee chose a beautiful lace gown by designer Madi Lane, which featured exposed boning and sparkles all over the tulle. Their daughter was also a part of the wedding ceremony, which was extremely important to the couple. She was one of their flower girls and stood with them while they made their speeches.

Dee and Rob’s Special Wedding Details

It was important to Dee that every significant parent in her life took part in walking her down the aisle, as she comes from a blended family and has two sets of parents whom she loves. She asked her biological dad and her stepmother to walk her down the first portion of the aisle and then to hand her over to her mother and stepfather who would then walk her down the aisle to her groom. Dee describes this as a ‘beautiful moment that [she] hoped represented all of [her] parents’ contributions to [her] upbringing’.
