True craftsmanship is both an art and a legacy, and Keith Lissner, current Executive Vice President of Design at Vera Wang, is a force to reckon with within the space of couture and fashion.
A true artist in his own right, Lissner moves effortlessly between the ethereal traditions of couture and the thrilling possibilities of the future. His vision, in all its forms, is revered for the past while integrating his ceaseless wonder for what lies ahead. At Vera Wang, he oversees not only bridal but also ready-to-wear (RTW), celebrity made-to-order, Simply Vera Vera Wang at Kohl’s, and Vera Wang Bride at Pronovias. It’s a peek into his creative acumen in glamour, craftsmanship, and innovation.
His story feels almost fated: shaped by a grandmother who owned a beloved dress boutique in Chicago, a father who championed chasing dreams without compromise, and a mother whose love for painting imbued his soul with color and creativity. Shares Lissner, “My grandmother Ruth was the greatest inspiration behind my pursuit of fashion. Before I was born, she owned a high-end dress boutique in Chicago, and I loved hearing stories about her shop. She had impeccable taste, an elegant style, and an indomitable spirit. Though she has passed, I feel her guiding me on this journey. My father instilled in my siblings and me the importance of following our passions and never settling, while my mother, who loved to paint, nurtured my appreciation for color and artistry. With their wisdom and the unwavering support of both my parents and siblings, I was able to pursue a career I truly love.”
Such influence runs like a golden thread through Lissner’s career built on talent, heart, heritage, and the power of artistry to move the soul.
A Brush with AI
Like all timeless artists, Keith Lissner has seen change come and go. His encounter with Artificial Intelligence (AI) four years ago was a turning point. Introduced over a casual lunch, image-generation AI initially unsettled him. Watching its early stages, he witnessed the technology create imperfect dresses and he feared that the craft he loved might one day become obsolete.
But where others might have retreated, Lissner was curious and determined. “Out of that fear, I began exploring AI, adopting a “join them if you can’t beat them” mindset. A year into my learning, I discovered MidJourney, and as the technology advanced, so did my understanding of it. I eventually realized that AI wasn’t a threat but a new set of tools—an extension of my creativity. The ideas remain mine, and the final vision is entirely my own,” explains Lissner.
Today, Lissner uses this technology not to replace the act of designing, but to breathe full visual life into his collections before a single fabric is cut. It allows him to dream on a grander, more imaginative scale but without the immediate pressures of production. Less mistakes, less waste of resources. And above all, crafting and working with breathtaking visuals meant allowing his work to still be entirely his own.
True Creativity Always Comes from the Soul
Lissner is confident that as technology aids the creative process, it can still never replicate the rawness of human intuition. “AI can enhance creativity,” he shares, “but it cannot create something entirely new.”
In this, Lissner is able to separate the tool and the artist. While AI gathers and learns from data, only can the human spirit dream beyond it. His collections, whether brought to life by hand or by digital brushstroke, have his very own fingerprints of authenticity, emotion, and originality.
Through this thoughtful balance, Lissner proves that innovation and tradition are not opposing forces but complementary to one another. It is a reminder that while AI learns from the past, it is only the human soul that dares to imagine what has never existed before.
The Modern Dreamer for Fashion’s Future
In the thick of modernization, Keith Lissner sees a bridge between the past and the future of fashion.
While many in the industry question the use of AI, Lissner is graceful, much like his decades long career. Through his work, he maintains that AI is not a cold replacement for artistry, but an extension of it. AI can become another medium for dreaming, imagining, and telling human stories, but only if we let it.
Still, it all must stem from the human mind and heart. The future of fashion means deeper creativity, greater sustainability, and infinite new forms of expression, where craftsmanship and technology elevate one another. Yet Lissner remains mindful: the utilization of technology in fashion is done with care to deepen one’s creative spirit and honor the roots of artistry.
