If you didn’t already know, the Kardashian have a penchant for giving their children rather unique names. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West probably take the cake for the most creative – North, Saint, and now Chicago.
But in an interview with Ellen Degeneres, Kim revealed that Chicago could have gone by a very different name.
Initially, the couple wanted to name little Chi “Donda” after Kanye’s late mother.
“He really wanted his mother’s name, and I love that name too … I just wasn’t sure. It’s so much to live up to.”
Kim said she initially wanted a one-syllable name and explained the original choices of the name.
“We were going to name her Jo, because my grandma, Mary Jo. Or we were going to go with Grace. And then it was Chicago. We ended up with Chicago.”
When Ellen asked if it was because Kanye is from Chicago, Kim said, “that is a place that made him and a place that he remembers his family from … I just felt like Chicago was cool and different.”
Kim also revealed that Kanye was busy playing Connect Four with his friends while she was in the delivery room with the surrogate and sister Kourtney Kardashian.
“I made Kourtney be in the room. We had a connecting room and Kanye was in there playing Connect Four with his friends and not really paying attention.”
Of the choice to use a surrogate, Kim said it was “best experience.”
“The moment she was getting the epidural I was like, ‘thank god this is not me.’
“It was so easy. She’s so amazing. I’ve become good friends with her. My deliveries were really bad. Always surgeries afterwards and crazy, scary things. it was just such a breeze.
“The second she came out, any fear that I had of, ‘Will I not have this connection? Will she not look like me?’ All of that goes out the door and instantly she’s ours.”
And if you’re curious about the pronunciation of Chicago’s one-syllable nickname, it’s Chi, like “shy.”
You’re welcome.
