How to Make Your First Christmas as Newlyweds Special

Tis’ the season to be jolly – but it’s also a season for firsts!

There’s definitely a long list of firsts to look forward to as newlyweds, but one of the biggest ones has to be your first Christmas together. Love is the true essence of this season, and there’s no better way to celebrate it than by spending time with your family and friends, practising old traditions, creating new traditions, and spending quality time together.

Here are 7 ways to make your first Christmas as newlyweds unforgettable.

1. Host a Get-Together

Christmas time is the perfect time to host a small get-together among your family or friends. This is the best way to put the gifts you got from your wedding registry to good use. Not only that, but it’s also a great way to cap the year off, by reminiscing through old times and creating new memories to look back to.

2. Travel Somewhere Together

Whether it’s just to a little Christmas village near your town or a totally different country, travelling somewhere is a great way to spend your first Christmas. This is a great way to create memories you’ll remember forever whether it’s just you as a couple, with friends, or with family.

3. Schedule Family Time

This one might get a bit tricky to figure out but with the proper planning, it is possible. It’s best to plan this ahead of time, especially if your extended families live a bit far from you. With two sets of families, you want to spend the holidays with, it’s important to divide your time wisely.

Spending time with family is a must, especially during this season. You can either alternate Thanksgiving and Christmas between the two families every year or spend it all together. This might be a little tough to figure out in the beginning but with proper coordination and communication, it’s totally possible.

4. Keep Old Traditions

Marriage is continuously getting to know each other. Keeping each other’s traditions you have had since childhood is a great way to know more about each other. Think of the traditions you’ve had since childhood and find a way to celebrate them together. It can be as simple as watching Christmas movies every weekend leading up to Christmas or making festive cookies.

5. Make New Traditions

You could also get creative and think of new traditions both of you as a couple can carry on for the years you’ll be together. Think of something you both enjoy doing together or something you think will be fun and meaningful for when you start a family. It can be anything you can think of, like taking a picture every year and using that as ornaments or a gingerbread house-making competition.

6. Prepare Advent Calendars for Each Other

A great way to also build up the excitement towards Christmas and to show how much you know your partner is creating a personalised and customised Advent calendar for each other. You could buy small and simple gifts you know your partner will appreciate and open them one by one from the 1st of December to Christmas Eve. It’s a fun little way to keep the holiday spirits up throughout the waiting period.

7. Plan a Christmas Date Night

With the hustle and bustle of the Christmas rush, it’s easy to forget to spend quality time with just the two of you. Make sure you should allocate time for both of you. It can be as simple as a movie night at home or a fancy dinner date out to your favourite restaurant.

Whatever you do, a way to make your first Christmas as newlyweds is to find time to celebrate the love you have for each other. After all, love is the true essence of Christmas.
