Head-Turning Race Day Style Tips

For this racing season, the talented Maria Fresnel of Roman & French has given us a breakdown of what’s trending, what’s hot, and the secret to looking your best (spoiler alert: it’s not your clothes).

What’s Hot Right Now?

Headbands and headpieces are a MUST for Race Day fashion. They’re easy to wear and look amazing on, whether your hair is up or down.

“I love a polished or slick hair style as much as I do a luxe-looking soft hair style,” says Roman & French’s Maria Fresnel. Her tips for what’s hot right now?

“Stay true to yourself. If that means tying a gorgeous silk-velvet bow on your shiny pony tail … then that’s perfect! I love that we’ve become so confident in wearing what makes us happy and not conforming to a feathery fascinator.”

Instead of the traditional look, Maria suggests a velvet, wide-brimmed hat as the piece to finish off your Race Day look. If you’re opting for a crown, Maria recommends testing to see if it suits your headshape before committing.

“In the instance where someone has an oval face or square jaw line, I love to see a crown on them because it elongates their face and balances their headpiece. Something that has leaves is gorgeous and we’re so fortunate to have amazing metallic pieces in leaf crowns or vines.”

Can I Choose or Can I Have It All?

“It’s all about the entire look, from head to toe. The headpiece, the clutch, the shoes, and the gorgeous jewellery to compliment the amazing dress.”

For Maria, there is no right or wrong. It’s all about what feels right and makes you feel good.

“You can be comfortable and super stylish. There’s an exciting trend where everything is more embellished than ever and it’s okay to wear as a Day Look.”

Pastels, Bold Brights and Metallics

Compared to the lace trend of last season, this racing season brings a broad range of colours and textures. The excitement of this colour palette will shine through in this year’s accessories of choice.

“A simple headband with a flower or a velvet bow, or a headband with metallic gold flowers embellished with pearls and coloured stones,” she suggests.

“I particularly love the combination of two bold colours – hot fuschia pink with blood red! It’s just so confident, especially when teamed with a gold metallic headband.”

Does it Look Too Bridal-ish?

With all the glitz, light spring colours, and stunningly detailed headpieces, it’s okay to be worried that your overall look may come across as a bit more bridal-chic than you had planned. But opting for sparkling silver accessories and headpieces shouldn’t be feared, as Maria reassures us.

“Not at all! Wendy from Wedded Wonderland wore a gorgeous silver leaf headband with amazing silver drop statement earrings on Studio 10’s Spring Racing Fashion Trends with her peach dress. The silver lifted her entire look.”

As for traditional wedding colours of white and ivory, Maria gives the go-ahead – as long as it’s a clean line suit or stunningly-cut dress. “You can compliment white with any colour, so opt for a rose gold headband and clutch, and even embellished rose gold heels. Or turn heads with soft pastels and a soft watercolour silk flower headband.”

The easiest way to stay away from a bridal look? Steer away from clear crystals. Opt for flatter or matte textures that complete the look and make it look fresh, crisp and floaty.

Clutch-ing at Space

With our hands glued to our phones, we need to make sure our perfectly-selected clutch can fit the essentials (read: our phones). With a range of colours and styles, Roman & French will have you covered for your Race Day bag.

“We’ve got some amazing clutches for this season, in a range of colours and sizes so you have enough space for your Race Day essentials. We’ve got everything from blush pink, rose gold, black and navy, with the options of gold or rose gold hardware.”

Less is More and More is More

Whether you like to keep things subtle or make a statement with bold fashion choices, both options are welcome with open, fashionable arms.

“There are two distinct looks at the moment,” explains Maria. “One is very D&G – rich in texture and baroque elements. The other is minimalist, clean lines but also luxe detail.”

“It’s really important to know that there are no rules. Your styling elements can be as little as, or as much as you like, as long as you love how you look and you feel great!”

Maria advises against matching too much in your Race Day look, instead drawing on design elements of the dress, skin tone, and hair colour.

Taking the Look from Day to Night

With a perfectly made-up face, great hair, and the right outfit, you won’t need much to take your Race Day look into the night. But the unanimous tip from the Roman & French team?

“Change your earrings. Simple as that. Choose a stunning statement pair that have the sparkle of Swarovski stones. But if you want to add another accessory to really lift your night-time look, add a gorgeous embellished belt to accentuate your waist.”

And of course, Maria’s most important style tip for racing season?

“Honour your own personal style, because the confidence you have when you are comfortable in your look will add so much.”
