The Modern Wedding Paradox: Why Couples Wait to Get Engaged but Marry Faster Than Ever

The Modern Wedding Paradox: Why Couples Wait to Get Engaged but Marry Faster Than Ever

Wedding traditions evolve as culture does, and one of the most interesting shifts we’ve noticed at Wedded Wonderland is what we call the modern wedding paradox – couples are waiting longer to get engaged, yet planning their weddings at lightning speed. It’s a fascinating contrast, especially when you compare it to past generations who were as quick to put a ring on it as they were to walk down the aisle. Let’s break it down.

Dissecting the Marriage Paradox

Prioritizing the self

Today’s generation of adults has priorities and lifestyles that revolve around self-actualization. From sports, creative pursuits, hobbies, to travelling, people are putting their personal growth first. For some, this also means having their career as a top priority. The accessibility of activities, promotion of capitalism on social media, coupled with the glorification of success, are just some of the factors that contributed to this shift.

While certainly a positive thing for championing individuality, this has also affected romantic relationships. For example, dating apps can lead men and women to grow weary because meeting new people feels gamified and less organic.

As for those who are already in relationships, they’re often not as hell-bent on tying the knot because they individually have goals they want to achieve before doing so. It could be finishing university, getting promoted at work, or completing a personal project. This delays engagements to a later point in the couple’s timeline.

Despite this, it is interesting to note that this has not substantially changed the average length of engagements, which can span 12-18 months.

Fast forward to the wedding

Once engaged, the wedding planning stage surprisingly doesn’t take as long as engagements. From what we’ve seen, couples can take 6-9 months to get their wedding together–sometimes less!

The main reason for this is the clarity of vision that couples increasingly have due to various resources available at their disposal – Pinterest boards, social media, wedding trend articles, etc. Because they consume so much content, they have a strong understanding of what they want, leading them to become more decisive during the planning process.

Another factor for quick turnarounds is the public announcement of engagements on social media, which makes people expect the wedding soon after.

The role of expert guidance

Of course, the key to expedited wedding planning is having expert support, especially with the range and multitude of services we have today.

What’s popular is concierge-style consultations through which couples can gain insights and get connected with vendors that match their budget, style, and other preferences. This eliminates research time and quickens decision-making. For example, couples interested in sustainable options can immediately get a vetted list of services & suppliers.

The surge of event planners with different specialties (e.g. destination weddings, luxury weddings) is also a gateway to streamlined, stress-free planning. These experts have the experience needed to navigate complex situations, such as staging elaborate celebrations that may incorporate cultural traditions from the couple’s heritage or that of the destination.

Precision is key to quick planning

To sum up, what’s driving the paradox of delayed engagements and quick planning is a combination of clear creative vision and expert support. However, a truly successful wedding execution lies in finding consultants with a strong understanding of the market and wedding realities.

It’s not enough to know what’s out there; what’s important is grasping how the best services can come together to achieve the dream wedding.

If a couple wishes to have a destination wedding in Italy within six months, for instance, they’d need a concierge who knows the right local vendors to approach to meet the time constraints. This requires knowledge of what Italian weddings entail and a good network of local connections.

It’s these complex situations that inspired us to create the Wedded Concierge. We wanted to make it easy for couples to actualize their vision by giving them immediate access to the world’s best vendors. Supported through our concierge services, we provide expert guidance on wedding planning and curate appropriate vendors to connect couples directly.

Our range of vendors runs the gamut from event stylists, planners, florists, caterers, venues, to entertainment and more – think of it as a one-stop shop for global, luxury wedding options.

No long queue before saying “I do”

It’s inspiring to see society put more time and effort into advancing personal goals and championing individuality. But wedding planning doesn’t have to be as arduous. Through expert-guided services like the Wedded Concierge, couples can reach their next chapter sooner than they think, granting them more space to do what matters to them most.
