We spoke with Personalised Weddings Couture’s proprietor and designer Virginia McGregor to find out what the biggest mistakes Brides make with their Wedding gown – so you don’t make them!

1. Pleasing Everyone Else

So, you’ve tried on a gown that you hate, but everyone from your Mum to the MIL and the Bridesmaids love it. Don’t make the mistake of succumbing to them and purchasing THEIR dream gown; it’s your day, don’t try and please everyone else.

2. Going Too High Fashion

Another big mistake is choosing a high-fashion, catwalk-style gown. Virginia warns that although these type of gowns can be fabulous on first impressions, they are often unrealistic to wear and will date quickly. The last thing you need after standing for a long ceremony is not being able to sit because the seams are too tight or the boning is uncomfortable, or worse, tripping over a long, heavy train on your way down the aisle!

3.  Forgetting the Weather

If you’re getting Married in the tropics, you’re probably not going to want a thick, heavy gown with long sleeves and a high neckline. Don’t underestimate the importance of the location and season on the type of gown you choose.

4. Not Trusting the Experts

If you’re going to a couturier, have an open mind. It’s great to know what you want, but be ready to hear the advice of your designer. They are the professionals and there’s a reason you chose to go with them! They’ll often be able to give you insider tips, ideas on what’s trending and options for a more flattering fit.

5. Being Unrealistic

Although the gown will likely be the most important dress purchase you’ll ever make, don’t let the emotions get in the way of perspective. Remember that your Big Day is about the Marriage, not the Wedding.
