Beyond the Aisle: Holly & Shaun’s Journey and Post-Wedding Wisdom

Holly and Shaun’s carefully curated and profoundly personal wedding reminds couples to embrace every aspect of the unique journey when planning your celebration of love.

Serendipity to Forever

Twelve years ago, in the serene coastal town of Ocean Grove, Victoria, Holly and Shaun began their love story. A chance meeting on a summer holiday led to a connection that would shape their lives. Their first date involved a long walk along the beach, endless conversation, and the innocence of young love unfolding on the swings of a nearby playground.

Years later, their journey came full circle when they decided to move back to Ocean Grove. While their careers often place them in fast-paced environments, the coastal town offers them a retreat—a place that feels like home.

Shauns Secret Itinerary

The proposal ruse was elaborate and well-executed. Shaun had planned every detail meticulously, ensuring that Holly remained unaware of his true intentions until the perfect moment. Shaun cleverly disguised the event as a work trip, leading Holly to believe they were embarking on a five-day itinerary for South Australia Tourism.

As Holly reflects, “Shaun disguised the proposal for a work trip – what I thought was a photoshoot and five-day long itinerary turned out to be a wedding proposal in the Adelaide Hills!” It was a moment that captured the essence of their love perfectly.

Timeless Elegance: The Aesthetic Vision Behind the Day

For Holly and Shaun, creating a wedding experience that immersed their guests in the things they loved most was paramount. When guests arrived, they were treated to a sensory journey—elegant decor, world-class cuisine, and a jazz-filled atmosphere reminiscent of a bygone era.

Every element was curated with precision. Gold-trimmed crockery and crisp white linen napkins adorned the tables. The menu featured a carefully selected food and wine pairing while a seven-piece jazz band played the classics of Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. Holly’s vision for florals was equally detailed: “My brief to our florist was classic, elegant—but mess it up! I wanted the flowers to look like they belonged. Organic, overgrown, but timeless.” The result? A wedding that exuded effortless sophistication.

A Quiet First Dance

While their guests enjoyed cocktails and canapés, Holly and Shaun stole a moment for themselves. “All I can recall from this moment was spinning around with Shaun in my beautiful gown to the sound of ‘Running Up That Hill’ by Kate Bush and having a moment with Shaun to just take in the fact that we were now husband and wife.” In that fleeting moment, time seemed to slow, and the world around them faded, leaving just the two of them in their intimate world. It was a serene pause before the night unfolded, giving them the space to fully embrace the significance of what had just happened.

Wedding Planning Wisdom

When it comes to wedding planning, the advice is simple – keep it organised.

“We kept everything meticulously planned,” Holly shares. “Having detailed spreadsheets made the process so much easier. We could see everything at a glance—from vendor information to costs and deadlines—making it simple to stay on track.” This level of organisation ensured no detail was overlooked, allowing them to focus on creating the wedding they envisioned rather than getting bogged down in last-minute scrambling.

Holly’s most crucial tip for couples is establishing a clear vision early on. “It sounds simple, but having a theme that you can sum up in one sentence helps guide every decision. For us, it was ‘1950s Grand Elegance—a soirée of fine food, wine, jazz, and dancing.’ When decisions felt overwhelming, we’d just ask, ‘Does this fit with our theme?’ It kept everything aligned and helped streamline the process.” Her advice is clear: define your wedding’s heart and let it shape every detail.

The Power of Support: Why They Hired an On-the-Day Coordinator

Throughout their wedding planning, Holly and Shaun were hands-on but also realised the importance of bringing in help. “The best decision we made was to hire an on-the-day coordinator…this allowed us to fully immerse ourselves and enjoy the day that we created together,” Holly reflects. This allowed them to focus on what mattered most—their celebration of love.

No Rush, Just Us

Two years into marriage, Holly and Shaun have discovered that marriage is a seamless extension of their already strong foundation. “Marriage for us has been a continuation of the foundation we already held—teamwork, deep understanding, and always having each other’s backs. In many ways, nothing has changed since we got married.”

One of their biggest lessons? Defying societal expectations and embracing their timeline. “People have this idea that there’s a set timeline in life: find a partner, get married, have kids. We’ve always done things in our own time. We got together at 18 but chose to wait until we were 30 to get married. There’s no rush! Make the timeline fit your schedule, not others.”

The Takeaway

Holly and Shaun’s love story is of serendipity, intention, and timeless elegance.

Their advice for couples planning their weddings is heartfelt and simple: “Enjoy the process, stay true to your love story, and make the day yours.”

For couples embarking on their wedding planning adventure, their message is clear: make every detail count, cherish the moments, and, most importantly, create a day that truly reflects who you are as a couple.

Your love story is unique, and your wedding should reflect that.
